Long time, no talk

I'll join the large group of my friends who have recently mentioned that they have neglected their livejournal. Yes, I'm one of them, too. I do read other people's entries, but I rarely make my own. I do make private entries that are summaries of my daily activities. Otherwise, I won't remember any of the smaller details ( Read more... )

Are you going to post the video so we can see what it looked like when it worked?

It's still a work in progress, and it's not worth showing the video. I took it as a 'proof of existence' in case the whole thing fritzed out. And that's a good thing because that's exactly what happened.

If I get find out what the problem is, fix it, and make it reliable, then I'll post a much better video. The secrecy has more to do with protecting my fragile ego than it has to do with protecting trade secrets for a potentially marketable product. Even if it worked perfectly, no one would buy it.

Lots of tangled mess, really. My room is a total mess because of all the boxes and wires strewn about in addition to the layer of clutter that is usually there.

That's...yeah, pretty much my entire life described right there. <3

I love messing with this stuff, so please let me know if I can be helpful in any capacity.

Yeah, I may bug you about it after Maker Faire, when all your other major deadlines will have passed. I have a tendency to jump a few steps ahead of where I should be because I'm eager to see things work. As a result, I may (do) not think about many of the other things that require serious consideration when trying to get something like this going,.

I need to think deeper about what I'm seeing and I need to get back to the breadboard before I go off half-cocked again creating PC boards.

I remember seeing the boards you had in a journal a while back. I thought they were pretty cool!

I'm an Electrical Engineering fanatic myself... if I had a dollar for every component I've fried I'd have at least 150 bucks :-p

It can be frustrating and discouraging at times but start with what you know and build up from there. When all else fails find an "expert" that you can ping ideas off of too. I have a few people at work I ask EE questions all the time.

I keep wanting to get into it, but my job has been a bit soul-sucking lately and I don't want to do anything other than veg out, minecraft and watch Farscape when I get home.

About the flux thing, have you considered trying to building a small DIY fume extractor? I've seen a bunch of interesting solutions online, usually involving 12v computer fans and some kind of filtering medium.
