A 17-year-old Herndon boy, Jose Sandoval, died this weekend after being shot on Sunday, May 16. Sandoval was walking with a 16-year-old Herndon girl about 9:41 p.m. in front of a townhouse development in the 1000 block of Park Avenue on Sunday, May 16, when the two were shot.
Herndon Police Sgt. Jerry Keys, public information officer, said it does not appear to have been a drive-by shooting, but the investigation is ongoing. He said the police are not sure where the teens were walking to or from. Keys also said police are reviewing whether the incident was gang-related.
Residents in the townhouse development said Monday that they heard four gunshots about 9:40 p.m. Sunday. One resident said at first she did not realize what she heard was gunfire, and another neighbor said her 4-year-old son asked if the shots were fireworks.
Once the residents looked outside, though, they said they saw Sandoval lying motionless in the street, near the speed limit sign on the right side of Park Avenue close to the intersection with Ferndale Avenue. The girl, neighbors said, was lying on the sidewalk near the sign and was moving her head around slightly.
A witness who heard the shots called police, who arrived soon after the incident. Neighbors said someone tried cardiopulmonary resuscitation on Sandoval, who was later pronounced dead at Reston Hospital. Emergency medical services staff transported the girl to a nearby hospital, where Keys said she is in stable condition.
Sandoval was a student at Herndon High School and the girl is also a student at Herndon High School, where Paul Regnier, spokesman for Fairfax County Public Schools, said there were additional counselors Monday, May 17. Regnier said Sandoval was a freshman and the girl is a sophomore.
Regnier said the school had not planned any event or support other than the extra counselors.
The police are investigating the event as a homicide. Anyone with information is asked to call the Herndon Police at 703-435-6846.
This incident marks the third major crime in Herndon in the past two weeks. On May 5, a Herndon home was invaded and an undisclosed amount of cash was stolen. NBC4 news reported in that case the suspects tied up the homeowners before robbing the house. Herndon Police released sketches of the suspects in that case but have not caught them.
An attempted robbery on May 8 resulted in a shooting, in which a 26-year-old Herndon man received gun shot wounds to his arm and abdomen. Herndon Police issued warrants for the arrests of Shalamar D. Dade and Eugene Alexander Jones, a Herndon man, in connection with the shooting. Keys said Monday, May 16, that the police are still looking for Dade and Jones.
Police said they did not believe the shooting on May 16 involved the suspects of either of the incidents in the previous week.
