I believe it's short for 'emotional', and it usually refers to someone who thinks that their life is a horrible emotional mess, and blows things out of proportion.
It's also a style of music, usually characterized by whiney, sad lyrics, and band members with long, straigt black hair someone reminiscent of (the much cooler) Jack White.
It's short for emotive. Which is pretty much the same thing as emotional. And it's one of those stereotypes that people can make fun of to make themselves feel like they're better than someone, even though most people who do that have some "emo" characteristics themselves.
But I'll admit, they are fun and easy to laugh at.
Then there's the emo haircuts...fringe over one eye, dyed black, straight and greasy. This is a defining characteristic of an emo.
I know many a cool emo kid. And I sometimes act all emo just because it's such a broad stereotype for teenage emotion. I think it happens to everybody. There are just people who don't want to admit to it, 'cause they don't feel like it's okay to be like everyone else. *shrug* Being a teenager just comes around to kick you in the shins every so often. Fairly regularly.
