Nothing bad had really happened. It was just a casual night, when Inoo suddenly got a text message from Takaki to come over. That sort of thing should be simple according to their long-term friendship. Which was the reason Inoo quickly changed his short pants into a proper white sweater and jeans, and spent twenty minutes of driving. Come to think of it. Inoo always be such a good buddy for members. When Hikaru got a trouble of his recent work, Inoo appeared to help. When Daiki was in a bad mood and needed a pair of ears to hear him, Inoo patiently stayed for three hours until the latter felt better. And now, Takaki asked him to come. Sure. To be fair, he should show up himself.
Forget about their past. Forget those times when even a stranger could tell Takaki and Inoo hadn’t being a really good friends. When they had lots of arguments. When Takaki was being a jerk and treating him differently than the rest. When Takaki kept calling him a random liar and he got irritated. That was all then. Before time healed everything. Growing up means they should accept each other’s flaws. And the longer they’ve been together, the more specific annoyances with him faded.
And the more he understood about Takaki,
The more he felt that…. something is wrong.
Despite of their on-cam moments looked so perfect and lovely, with those fanservices and flirtations, Inoo was still not good at talking. Not to Takaki. He’d never given any indication that he wasn’t happy when it was just two of them, because that’s never what it was. He loved it. He treasured every single moment of their companies until he was desperate enough how to keep this alone. He loved it when Takaki talked, when he laughed until his eyes formed thin lines, when Takaki smiled like it would wrap the air with such indefinable warmth, when Takaki kept hearing his lame jokes, when Takaki-
Damn it.
He should just stop.
Stop dreaming, Kei.
Amidst the thoughts, Inoo had realized he already arrived on Takaki’s apartment. Standing in front of the door. He waited for himself to calm down. He was too nervous, but in the end, Inoo finally rang the bell.
Ding… Dong…
No one answered.
Ding… Dong…
“Excuse me?” Inoo began, trying to make it louder.
Still, no answer.
Ding… Dong…
After a while, Inoo held the knob. And to his surprise, it wasn’t locked.
“Takaki? Are you there?”
“Ah…..”
The first thing came to his view was Takaki sat down helplessly on the floor, with a side of his cheek laid on top of wooden table, full of beer cans.
It was eerily quiet inside, and the television kept showing something about suspense drama Inoo hardly identified. But there wasn’t any sound, like someone had just turned off the volume.
“You came…” Takaki weakly smiled.
“Gosh…. You’re drunk!!” Inoo pointed out.
“Not really.”
“What is happening with you?!”
Takaki slowly raised his head while closing his eyes, trying to get some balance on his position. He slipped his hand on the way, and an opened can spilled the liquid to the floor, caused a mess. So improper. So unsynchronized. So not Takaki. And Inoo hated that there was a voice in the back of his head telling him whatever might cause Takaki to be like this, won’t be a good thing.
The pretty guy took a seat beside his bandmate, studying the appearance from hair to toe. Red face, messy amber hair, dizzy smell, terrible.
“Takaki, what-“
“Mmmmnn…”
“Takaki!!!”
“………………………………………..”
“What’s wrong with you-“
But before he could speak up further, something heavy suddenly crashed into his right shoulder. Which made Inoo dying to convince if it was real. That Takaki was currently burying his face on his shoulder was real. Back to an hour ago, Inoo wouldn’t expect something like this occur. Not in the slightest. They’ve never been this close after all. Not when they were off cam. And a hazy scent of musky cologne penetrated Inoo’s nose amidst the dominance alcohol.
“Takaki…”
“I broke up with my girlfriend…”
It made sense.
“………………………………………..”
“She said we didn’t walk on the same path anymore.”
“………………………………………..”
“That sounds stupid, right? This is like, my third time hearing the same reasons. Damn. I don’t understand women at all.”
Rather than being sad, and heartbroken, Inoo found it as a complaint. Like when Takaki complained Yamada played with his phone. Or when the photographers didn’t get the best shots of him. Or when Hikaru forgot his birthday. It was just-complaint.
Inoo closed his eyes. Deep. Breathing the thick air. Had no idea of proper reaction. And of course, he couldn’t just immediately jump and dance to celebrate this news. So that he just stunned there, straightly, letting Takaki breathed on his neck.
“………………………………………..”
“And you should cheer me tonight.”
I will.
“But-why me?”
“I don’t know either,” Takaki lifted his face up. And someone should just come in between them right now. Because they were so close, too close, and Inoo would throw anything away to kiss those seductive lips right in front of his eyes. “I just feel like-you’ll be happy with this.”
“W-what?”
“You’re happy, right?”
“………………………………………..”
“You’re happy because I broke up with my girlfriend. Right, Inoo?”
Inoo wasn’t sure why should Takaki use his deep and silky voice by now. He whispered quietly. Fuck it. Because he swore, it made everything worse. Because it gave Inoo too much pressure. Because, God, he couldn’t just say ‘yes’ as much as he wanted to do.
“I am-I don’t know…”
Inoo turned his eyes away. Anywhere. As long as they wouldn’t meet Takaki’s.
“………………………………………..”
“I mean…” He continued. “I don’t know… Because…”
What Inoo didn’t see would coming is that Takaki suddenly brushed his lips upon him. A sudden kiss. A stolen kiss that no one predicted this would happen. And the taste of alcohol spread inside his mouth was real. The touching noses between them was real. Dizzy, and soft, and electrical, and shocking-
How could this happen when all he thought that Takaki was out of his league? When imagining about kissing Takaki felt so ominous, so wrong, so deviated?
“You’re….. appreciating my break up, aren’t you?”
He whispered again.
Again.
Oh God.
Inoo listened to all of this in shock. He was having a hard time concentrating. He didn’t want to ruin things. All these things transformed into relentlessly torture for him. If only, if only he could be honest right now, if only this was the right time-
“Shit. I can’t do this.” Inoo cursed.
In a quick move, Inoo already stood up. Fairytale wasn’t real. He couldn’t just assume a kiss meant Takaki had the same feeling as him. A desperate and hopeless feeling. That he believed for years he’d fallen into one-sided trap all this time. And he head to the door. And his stomach felt like pressing him so much until his heartbeat messed up.
“………………………………………..”
“I’m sorry Takaki but I’ll just leave.”
But a pair of arms circled him from behind. Stopping him. Making all those raging flutters gotten worse than it possibly did. It was a weak embrace, though, and Inoo was strong enough to escape. But he didn’t do that. He can’t do that.
“Please, stay with me…” Takaki pleaded.
“………………………………………..”
“I don’t know, Inoo. I don’t know but-when she asked me for break up, your face always haunted my mind. I was thinking about you. All about you.”
“Please… don’t…”
“I need an explanation. I just-well-I was out of ideas. Your smile was coming abruptly to my mind, and I couldn’t leave it alone. I’m-“. A sigh of frustration came over. Takaki just leaned his face on Inoo’s shoulder for second time tonight. “I’m desperate for an answer. Gimme an answer…”
Because I love you.
Tell him this is a joke. Tell him maybe somewhere out there, Takaki had a camera to prank him. Because there was no way Inoo will admit his feelings. Not now. And the words were still constricted so tightly in Inoo’s throat.
“You’re drunk.”
“Trust me. I’m used to heavier drinks. If you think these beers could defeat me, or made me faint, you’re definitely wrong.”
“………………………………………..”
“Maybe I look terrible, but I’m still on my mind.”
“I can’t-“
“Stay.”
“Pete’s sake!!” Inoo turned back, feeling his self-defense almost ruined at this moment. Gosh. Maybe he shouldn’t be happy when Takaki messaged him. Maybe he should just reply that he was busy. Maybe his car wouldn’t have to perform well so he had a reason not to showing up himself tonight. Thus at least he shouldn’t look at helpless Takaki, adoring his messy handsome face, which covered him in goose bumps. “If you know that I’m being happy with your break up then you should now I can’t stay casual about it!! I don’t want to give you company and let myself cross the boundaries between us, tonight, when there was a possibility you might throw up later, tipsy, sleep, and forget what happened when you wake up tomorrow!! I can’t stand that!!”
“I told you I ain’t that drunk!!”
“You’re drunk enough that you didn’t realize you’ve just-!!!“
“I kissed you and I was fully aware of that!!!”
“………………………………………..”
“I thought about you that time!!! I swear I need an answer!!!”
“You won’t get the answer.”
“………………………………………..”
“………………………………………..”
“Alright.” Takaki kneeled down, probably couldn’t handle his turbulence mind. Buried his face on his folded arms. “Even if I couldn’t get the answer of those whys tonight, I hope you’ll just stay. Be here with me. Give me company. Because-“
“………………………………………..”
“Because even if you didn’t appear at those moments, I’ll still choose you,”
“………………………………………..”
“to stay…..”
“………………………………………..”
“So…. Please…”
Inoo hesitated for a moment. Trying to keep his pride. Although he knew, he was already broken inside. But the view of Takaki begged him right now, and the thought of Takaki will spend the night alone with those cheap beers left him no option. His legs refused to do what his mind said. Thus he joined Takaki kneeling down occasionally, patting the older’s head. The short interchange between his skin and Takaki’s soft hair had sent his brain spiraling down all sorts of longing.
“Promise me…… you won’t regret your decision to ask me stay.”
Takaki nodded.
“Because I can’t forgive you if you just forget what happened earlier.”
“I won’t.” Takaki grimaced. Finally set his eyes to stare at Inoo. “I promise.”
“That was my first, you know.”
“Really?”
Inoo nodded, and smiled a bit. “So embarrassing. I’m such a useless man on his 26.”
“No. It’s perfect.”
And it was.
As they slowly leaned closer, with Inoo properly traced his fingers between Takaki’s this time,
having their second, liquefying kiss.
