Riding a bike is not "like riding a bike"

As some of you may know, in the 5th grade, I broke my right leg while showing off on a bicycle in my father's driveway.  I was in a cast for 6 months.  Since then I've only ridden a bicycle once or twice, no later than high school.

When I was in 5th grade, my hometown cops did a day-long "come over to the police station and bike around this course we built for you and we'll teach you a few things about safety" thing. And when I stopped at the mini-street stop sign, I never put my feet on the ground - I left them on my pedals and just about started pedaling away when I didn't see any imaginary cars coming my way. (Yes, I was sure to look both ways for the imaginary cars.) But the cop stopped me and said that before crossing into an intersection, even if there aren't any cars coming, you must come to a complete stop and put both of your feet on the ground. So I did that, and my seat was high enough that I could touch the feet with my toes but not with my whole foot. So that's when he said, "You need to lower your seat, because you're supposed to put your feet flat on the ground while seated." Well crap. So, according to the police, this is the official way to ride your bike -- you are, in fact, supposed to have your feet touch the ground. But I, some 10 ( ... )
