Seth could get away with a lot of things by using big words. He could mumble a lot of insults to the water polo team in lots of words they wouldn't get because they weren't home every Friday and Saturday night of every grade from sixth to tenth grade studying the vocabulary list. Seth wasn't always home on Friday nights, actually. His father had signed him up for boxing class in sixth grade but after a punch-to-the-jaw mishap, those lessons were very much squashed under the mighty foot of his mother.
Seth could very easily call Summer a zatfig girl without getting his ass kicked. Instead she'd just roll her eyes and then continue to make out with him. Which was really okay in Seth's book.
But there was that one thing he couldn't bring himself to say. Every time he'd come near it he tripped and bumbled over his words as if they were his untied shoelaces. And Ryan would just stare, raise an eyebrow and smile slgihtly. And all Seth wanted to say was that he loved Ryan Atwood. That was it. But then his big words came back to him and bit him in the ass. There. That was simple. He could say that.
But his cheeks flushed a red and pinky color and he made an excuse about being tired and would scurry off. And Seth might be paranoid, but he could swear Ryan knew. The way Ryan looked at him over dinner, it was...off. Seth hadn't even slipped in the biggest word he knew. Love.
Seth barged into the poolhouse after dinner. Well, it wasn't exactly barging. More, walking in quietly, but not so quietly that it was stalker-like. "Ryan, what's going on?" he asked loudly.
Ryan barely looked up from his book. "Nothing," he replied.
"It's something. Something, something, something, not nothing. So tell me. I know you're not good at words, but just try. For me, Ryan," Seth rambled.
"You want me to try? I'll try. I'll try to stop looking at you or talking to you, that would make this easier," Ryan snapped, frustrated.
Seth paused. "Ryan...I, I need to tell you that. Okay, it's weird. I broke up with Summer for this, um, person. Because I like them more than her and I couldn't keep using her like I was. Right? Right. And I, I dunno, I guess you might know them. So you know how'd they react when I told them, you know, how it was and all. So could you, like, help a brother out? Tell me how to say it because I really don't know how. I'm not good with words but I have a lot to use so maybe you could sort of guide me in a direction. Right? Yeah. It wouldn't be so -- " Seth started mumbling and rambling again, and was getting no where. Not until he was interuppted.
By Ryan's lips.
Ryan pulled away, smiling a little crooked smile. "Seth," he said, his voice low, "I love you too,"
Seth smiled. "That's..." he said, "That's just great!"
