Prologue: The First Meeting
“So you’re the kid that the Powells took in, right?” Peter Burke asked the kid sitting on the front porch of his next door neighbor’s house. “Hi, I’m Peter, I’m going to be looking after you for a bit. I hope that we’ll get along okay.”
“A word to the wise, when dealing with kids, it’s best not to say that you’re going to be looking after them,” Neal Caffrey replied. He shot a glare up at the older boy. “I don’t need a babysitter.”
“Then how about just a friend?” Peter asked. He offered Neal a smile as he sat down on the porch a step below.
“Why would a teenager want to be friends with a kid?” Neal asked, still giving Peter a suspicious look.
“Hey, the deal is that you get to run around all you want if you let me go with you. If you refuse my offer, you have to stay in the yard,” Peter said. He crossed his arms and leaned onto his knees with them. “And let me tell you, it's boring being confined to one place all of the time.”
“I can manage,” Neal said, stubbornly lifting his chin.
Peter sighed and ran a hand through his hair. “Why don't we try this again? I’m Peter Burke, your next door neighbor; would you like to hang out with me?”
“Neal Caffrey and I’ll think about it,” Neal replied. He shook Peter’s hand and then stood up.
“Before you head back inside, I have money to go see a movie,” Peter said, “if you want.”
“Fine, but you’re not babysitting me,” Neal said as he moved away from the door.
“Think of it more as a big brother type of a thing,” Peter replied. “You can even pick the movie.” He started walking when Neal caught up to where he was, leading the way to where they wanted to go.
