don't try this at home

I have been awake for 24 hours for no reason.

“Spock, look at what’s already happened to us,” Jim’s voice was insistent. Spock could picture the expression on his face, an emotional display he would be helpless to resist, filled with human love, grief, and urgency all mixed in a way that made Jim’s features all the more beautiful. “Think about it ( Read more... )

I hate you. A lot. Just so you know.

Because I totally didn't need to get caught up in New Trek fic when I haven't even seen the movie yet (a fact that sadly won't be remedied until I can pirate acquire a decent copy of it for free). The "have to get married" cliche is one of my secret guilty pleasures, but man. That thing just keeps going and going, doesn't it? And that excerpt... I'm almost afraid to read on. In a sort of horrified but also intrigued kind of way. XD

Also, I just realized that new Spock is the same guy as Sylar from Heroes. Huh.

ASDKFJPSOLSK WATCH NEW TREK, YOU WILL NOT REGRET IT. Unless you're a purist or like plots that make sense or something. (Western Film will be running it starting on Friday, so if you're in the London area, you could see it for less than five bucks ...)

I know, I went into the fic going, "Ooooh, marriage of convenience, my sweet secret lover!" It took, like, 40 parts to get to the level of crazy quoted above, but once I was started, it was like watching a train wreck in slow motion, in that I couldn't look away, and I was torn between laughter and bitter, bitter weeping.

How could you not know about Zachary Quinto?! It is worth dipping your toes into the fandom for the RPF alone. (Six months ago I would have been horrified at the thought of myself writing that last sentence.) He and Chris Pine (guy who plays Kirk) have the greatest buddy interviews ever, full of four- and five- syllable words, occasional random singing, and chemistry, baby.

Hooray campus movie theatres! \o/ It's one of the highlights of my life, to tell the truth.

Hahahaha, the miscarriage! That was the point where I put my head down on the desk and shook with laughter. I'd been keeping it together up until that point, but seriously.

See, if you knew anything about ZQuinto and CPine, I could totally link you to RPS. *shifty eyes*

in fanfic... why does someone always have to either be (or almost be) raped as well as lose a baby? Possibly having lost that baby because of being raped.

Oh fanfic, I just can't love you anymore.

The best part was when some random hot woman who'd been set up as a Horrible Person because she didn't understand that she couldn't come between Kirk and Spock because they were Meant To Be talked about how awesome chivalry was. When Spock said, hey, chivalry's kind of antifeminist, she was like, not everything has to be feminist, duh. That was the author showing her feminist cred -- Hated Female Character expressed antifeminist sentiment; the audience (presumably) hates Hated Female Character; thus, this is a feminist story! Yay!

And then Spock got sexually assaulted while "fertile" due to some uterus-implanting surgery that made him irresistable to male Vulcans. Or something.

Awww, not all fanfiction makes the baby Jeebus cry. A significant portion of it is in the range of pretty decent to gender-bendingly, post-colonially, mind-blowingly brilliant. I refer you to this post and this analysis, although you may find them tedious and inaccessible if you find fandom in general to be past its best-before date.
