Summary: Fifty random moments that make up a beautiful life together
Authors Notes: Written for
1sentence where the aim of the game is to write one sentence for each theme.
As always, my most sincere apologies to grammar for the irrevocable abuse I have inflicted upon it. :O) As with the other Snapshots fics, the sentences appear random and are out of chronological order but they do tell a story as a whole.
01. Walking
He has stopped Serena getting hit by a taxicab and his pie has been run over and he is trying to be helpful and she suddenly appears, ushering Serena into a cab and glaring at him like he has just destroyed her favourite toy.
02. Waltz
He hates this stuffy dance and the people who surround them who can do it ten times better than he can, but he knows it’s a small price to pay to be part of her world, so he just pulls her tighter and waltzes her around the floor.
03. Wishes
She closes her eyes and blows out the candles, making the traditional birthday wish, having no idea that its about to be fulfilled in a completely unexpected way.
04. Wonder
It’s something he’s always wanted to see, and standing there with the clear blue sky and fine sand and seeing something that has been here for thousands of years should be wonderful and awe-inspiring, but all he can concentrate on is her, standing beside him, her fingers laced through his and her wedding ring cool against his skin.
05. Worry
They have been avoiding this day for months, at first because they were still tenuous in their new relationship, and then because they were worried about her reaction, but in the end Serena surprised them all by being nothing but thrilled for them.
06. Whimsy
He packs them lunch and they stroll through the park, later stopping to eat and talk and with the light peeking through the tree leaves above them she falls asleep on his arm.
07. Waste/Wasteland
She's had too much to drink and he's escorted her back to her room for safe keeping; she asks him to unzip her and with shallow breath he slowly pulls the zip down the length of her back, and just before he is about to reach out and touch her porcelain skin she stumbles forward and collapses onto the bed.
08. Whiskey and rum
He opens his door to find her standing there, a bag of Chinese take-out in one hand and a bottle of alcohol in the other; he just stands aside and lets her in and neither question why it was his door she knocked on.
09. War
As he sits down beside her in the long brick hallway he doesn’t know why he has gotten in the middle of this, nor why he has chosen her side.
10. Weddings
They attend Serena’s wedding, the first of their group to walk down the aisle, and even though neither will admit it, for a brief moment they both think about how easily things could have been different, how easily they could never have existed.
11. Birthday
He stands in the shop, completely confused and overwhelmed, and when approached by a sales assistant asking if he needs help he says, “Any ideas about what to get the best friend of my girlfriend, who is rich and snobby and hates me?”
12. Blessing
They are lying in bed together when she suddenly reaches for his hand and places it on her swollen belly; he feels the movement and meets her eyes with a wondrous expression.
13. Bias
For as long as he can remember he has hated the Upper East Side and everything it represents; so of course, he thinks with a wry smile, he has ended up falling for its queen.
14. Burning
He wants to reach out and touch her, just the light touch of his fingertip to her hand, her arm, her knee, but he can’t because she would never let him.
15. Breathing
She wakes in the middle of the night, a loud humming-like noise permeating the room, and she turns and sees him lying beside her; she rolls her eyes, thinking of course he snores.
16. Breaking
They stumble back into the room, all hands and lips and tongues, and clothes are shed before they fall onto the bed together, finally with no barriers between them.
17. Belief
He doesn’t want to have faith in them, doesn’t want to get his hopes up and have those hopes come crashing down around him, but when she smiles at him he can’t help but believe that they are meant for this.
18. Balloon
They walk in the front door, the tiny bundle safe in her arms, and the new family is greeted to an apartment filled with flowers and blue balloons.
19. Balcony
The city is spread before them, and it’s beautiful and romantic and even though he is terrified she might throw him over the balcony for what he is about to attempt he can’t help but kiss her anyway.
20. Bane
He has always hated poetry, short stories being his form of choice, but sitting there, watching her sit in quiet joy as the paintbrush moves easily along the canvas, he can’t help but compose a sonnet in his mind.
21. Quiet
It’s the quiet moments she enjoys most, when it’s just him and her and she reads while he writes, or they lie on the couch together in front of the TV or curl up in bed on a Sunday morning.
22. Quirks
It’s late and he is one of the last to leave, and after he descends the stairs he sees her yellow headband on the floor, lying there all night after he removed it from her and threw it away, and he smiles, picking it up and taking it with him.
23. Question
As they lie in bed a rare moment of anxiety bubbles within her and she whispers, “Do you love me?” and his reply is just to snuggle closer and smile, saying, “Would I be here if I didn’t?”
24. Quarrel
The door slams in his face and he pounds and screams and slumps to the floor.
25. Quitting
The floor is cold beneath her and she can hear him begging to be let in as tears stream down her face and for the first time she thinks that this could really be it for them.
26. Jump
“Love isn’t a leap of faith,” he says, because it wasn’t for them; they simply stumbled into something that neither would have consented to had they been asked.
27. Jester
She doesn’t know why she agrees to go to him with her problems, but she does and he listens and he actually seems to care, and it’s possibly the first time she sees him as more, more than just the fool from Brooklyn who somehow managed to charm his way into Serena’s life.
28. Jousting
It’s always been this way, the back and forth, words laced with contempt, ever since they first met, only now for some weird reason it actually starts to bother him.
29. Jewel
She has been wearing bigger diamonds since she was fourteen but she doesn’t care if its small because he chose it and bought it and asked her to marry him and she used to kinda hate him and now she can’t imagine life without him and she grins when the ring is slipped onto her finger and he kisses her lips.
30. Just
She finds herself agreeing to go to this party, where she knows no-one and doesn’t particularly care to remedy that situation, just because he asked.
31. Smirk
She smiles, like she knows something he doesn’t, and for the first time he truly appreciates how much must be going on inside that mind of hers.
32. Sorrow
It’s over, the twisted thing between her and Chuck, and she hates him (and herself) for thinking it could ever work, and she refuses to see Serena or Nate but when he walks into the room, sits beside her and carefully takes her hand, she lets him stay.
33. Stupidity
One day he compares them to Lizzy and Mr Darcy, what with all their bickering and miscommunications, and her perfect response is a screwed up face and a “Seriously?”
34. Serenade
He hears her singing to herself and when he jokingly asks her to sing something for him she turns to him and says, “Never in a million years,” but then she smiles and kisses him and adds, “Well, maybe in a thousand years, if you’re really lucky.”
35. Sarcasm
Her native tongue is sardonic wit while his is sarcasm, only now the intention is not to make the other annoyed or offended, but to make them smile and laugh.
36. Sordid
When she thinks back on her past, with all the lies and games and deviousness, she will cross the room to kiss him for reasons he will never question and she will never explain.
37. Soliloquy
He wants to write her, use her as his inspiration, but when he sits down and thinks about it and says all her defining characteristics out loud, he knows that any attempt to capture her on paper is useless, because she is made up of so many unique and contradictory adjectives that no one would ever believe she was real.
38. Sojourn
She knows that he is uncomfortable with the wealth she has, and has been used to spending her whole life, but for better or worse its part of who she is and if he wants to be with her he’ll have to accept it, so she ignores his protests when she presents him with two first class tickets to Rome.
39. Share
Her mothers apartment is filled with racks of silk and lace, and she stands in a beautiful ivory gown as her mother and wedding planner and their multiple assistants talk and make calls and plans and lists, and she suddenly realises that she doesn’t want a big white wedding, she doesn’t want to share the most important day of her life with a bunch of people she’s been obligated to invite and when she is finally alone she calls him and says, “Let’s elope.”
40. Solitary
He’s gone up to Hudson to visit his mother and he somehow knew she wasn’t ready to do the ‘trip away to meet the parents’ thing so he didn’t ask her to come with, and now, as she sits alone in her apartment, she realises that he has slowly but surely taken up such a significant part of her life and she misses him when he’s gone.
41. Nowhere
She knows from the start that this can’t go anywhere, that they are too different, too set in their ways to change for one another, too so not made for one another; and for the first time she doesn’t mind, glad to not have to live up to the expectations of an ‘epic love’ like she has in the past.
42. Neutral
Jenny looks at him, a slight tilt of the head, and asks, “Are you actually defending Blair Waldorf?” and of course his answer is, “No, not at all, but maybe there is more going on here than we realise.”
43. Nuance
His lips touch hers and she keeps her eyes open, because even though it’s not a complete surprise, that somehow somewhere inside her she knew this was coming, she still can’t quite believe it’s real.
44. Near
The first big clue is how his breath seems to become shallow every time she is near.
45. Natural
She realises that he loves her, completely, there are no ulterior motives or games, just genuine love and affection, and the feeling is something she could get used to.
46. Horizon
She can't say it back, those three words having far too much power (they’ve been said to her before by betraying lips) and without her saying a word he gets all of this, gets her, and he knows that in time, she will be ready.
47. Valiant
She has gone against expectations for a while now - it began when she started dating him - but he still can’t believe she has come this far, and as a random judge in City Hall pronounces them husband and wife he has never been more proud or in love.
48. Virtuous
She is trying to do the right thing for Serena and when he asks to see her she lies, tries to spare his feelings for the first time, actually feels bad that Serena is abusing him in this way, but of course, being the idiot that he is, he presses for the truth and so she reluctantly gives it.
49. Victory
They are walking down the street and he takes her hand, laces their fingers together, and it’s the first time she has allowed any kind of display of affection in public, and another small battle is won.
50. Defeat
There has been a war of words between them, ever since the first day they met, and now he has bested her, won her over with sincerity and kindness, and for the first time in her life, defeat feels like the best thing that has ever happened to her.
