[TM] Phone Calls Coming and Going

Aug 03, 2006 05:49

Xander rubbed the back of his head hard with the heel of his hand. Oz and him had been making phone calls, and mostly leaving messages with everyone that he could sort out needed to know the truth. Orlando was still making arrangements Xander was sure, but it wasn't the point to fill everyone in on the details. It was just to let them know that ( Read more... )

[TM] Gwen voicemail _freaksrus August 3 2006, 12:03:28 UTC
Hey Xander, this is Gwen. Thanks for letting me know about Cordelia. I hadn't heard anything about her, but then again news doesn't travel so fast in China. I can't make the funeral, but I would like to do something. If you know of any donations or anything in her name, let me know.

*pauses*

And if you see Angel tell him I'm sorry for his loss. Give my condolences to Cordelia's husband, too.

Xander gets the voicemail from Gwen and almost envies her for being so far away from it all, so far removed. He makes a note to ask Orlando about charities that Cordelia supported so that if anyone else wanted to know he could get that information as well.

Connor doesn't know Xander Harris, though he has, of course, heard of him through Cordelia. But after Xander's call to Darla, it seems he's the one to find out about the service from, and better Xander than Orlando anyway. So he uses the number Darla gave him to call back.

"Hi," he says, when someone picks up, "This is Connor."

Angel's son, Darla's son, he doesn't know how to introduce himself, and he certainly won't by mentioning what he was to Cordelia, because he never was completely sure about this himself.

"I'm calling because of the service. For Cordelia."

Xander recognized the name, mainly from Faith, a little bit from the few journal entries Kara had written that he actually read while bored at work one day. This... this was Angel's son. "Connor, I'm glad you called. We've never actually met, but knowing the kind soul Cordelia had... if you were special to her, I'm sure you are one amazing guy." He tries to sound heartfelt, to try and ease whatever tension this phone call has to be creating, but he's not even sure if he's doing it right.

"I would have called, I just thought there wasn't much else I could have told you... I know Orlando is still waiting for a phone call back from the funeral director... about the theatre. But I have your number on my caller ID now... if you'd like when I hear from him? I'll let you know."

What do you say to your first love's first love? Maybe if they were talking face to face, Connor could think of something. Right now, he just feels tongue-tied and vaguely hollow.

"Cordelia had photos of you from Sunnydale," he says apropos of nothing, and also because it is true - he found them for her in the Hyperion once upon a time. Then something else registers, and he's grateful he can ask something definite:

"...theatre? What about a theatre?"

What did a theatre have to do with Cordelia's funeral?

"Yeah, please let me know."

Picking up his cell on the first ring was becoming instinct for him, he answered and found himself talking to Andrew, which he was sure was one of Oz's calls. Grateful that he hadn't been making all the calls, but glad to be reigning it all in at least he rubbed at his jaw a bit, "Andrew, good to hear from you. Sorry it's under these circumstances though..."

There wasn't much else to say to start these sort of things off just yet. It was all still surreal in the it is reality sort of way.

"Are you alright?" he sat and waited to hear his voice

Xander wanted to laugh at the oddity of how that single question sounded, was he alright? Sure he was just fine. He had up and left his job on such short notice that there might not be a job for him to go back to, his best friend was killed in a car accident, and what made it even more painful of a reality was that she was pregnant at the time. He offerred to make all these phone calls thinking that it would make it easier, that saying the same cold hard facts would numb him to it that much more. Instead he was just feeling it over and over again ( ... )

Spike is still stunned by the news of Cordy's sudden death. He really doesn't know how to react to such a tragedy or what if anything he can do. Just like when Buffy's mum died, he feels powerless to help. But knows that durin' such times of great heartache, he has to go out of his way to give whatever solace or moral support he can to Cordy's friends and family.

He calls the number Oz gave him. "Hello, Xander. It's Spike. I got the message from Oz about you handlin' all the arrangements for Cordy's funeral."

Sighing. "Not sure how welcome a vampire would be at a funeral. But do wanna pay my final respects. And if needed, to help out however possible. So if their's anythin' I can do to help. Just let me know."

The call from Spike was a bit odd. Well odd in the we used to be roommates but now we haven't really spoken since you died... sort of way. Did Vampires even actually 'die' and does he have to go through the whole thanks for the effort back in the Dale part of it? He figured that Buffy had explained it a while back, and they could just skip over that and get right to the depressing part of the call, which Spike managed to do with tact.

"Thanks Spike, Orlando made sure that the memorial is going to be at night. Cordy figured most of her visitors would have that whole 'sun allergy' thing, so its being taken care of. Orlando is trying to reserve a theatre downtown here. So once he hears from them he's going to give me the final notes. I can call you with that information when I get it if you'd like."

It's been a long time since Sunnydale. So is a bit awkward to be talkin' to Xander. Even more so since he clearly has grown up a bit more. Seems to be a bit more mature, and is certainly being Mr. Responsible with the helping out with Cordelia's funeral. "Good to hear it's gonna be at night. The sun allergic guests won't need any flame-retardant suits then ( ... )

Willow had no choice but to drive back to Boston, considering the bads she had with her. There were certain things that were simply not safe to check, or to pass through airport security. But she had been so lost in her own thoughts that she never even heard the phone ring, at least until the voicemail notification came through. It occured to her, in the way that those moments happen, just how shaken she still was. Self awareness was key, and she pulled into the closest rest stop to return Xander's call, waiting for the sound of his voice on the other line.

His cell phone had been ringing pretty often, and he barely let the caller ID register because he just prepared himself for someone else that he hadn't spoken to in so long. It was just upsetting that it took the death of Cordelia for him to actually talk to these people again. Still it was better now, than too late... as it was he already lost Cordelia.

When his cell rang again he sighed and finally let the caller ID pick up the number, a tiny smile creeped onto his face, he was glad it was finally someone he knew, and knew well, and wanted to hear from, "Willow, I'm so glad it's you. If I had to tell one more person that I didn't know anything else... This isn't fair."

There it was again, that same hitch of the strange in the voice she knew so well. The one she had only heard two, maybe three times before. It reminded Willow just how wrong everything was.

"Xander." There was something in her voice too, almost as if she was listening to it on playback. It always sounded like not-you. This was not her. "You aren't doing this by yourself, are you?"

The weight was slowly pulling him apart at the seams. Seams that he knew hadn't really been stitched up as tight as they used to be. Loss... loss wasn't something Xander dealt with exactly with great ease. Anya... it had taken him going to great lengths to deal with Anya's death, and even that still was almost too much for him to do for everyone that passed away. He was just never good at these things... no one should be either.

Hearing her concern, and the distance in her voice, the worry as well it brought him back in a bit, "No... Oz was here. There were too many calls to make, and Orlando's doing the actual arrangements... I just wanted to help. I feel like I didn't help enough... it was a car accident Wills... something could have been changed."
