The end of the great count of the equinoctial precession has some interesting alignments that were and can still be meaningful. The symbology of the alignments is the reason for its being chosen as click point.
Astronomically, I believe it would be a good time to study dark matter, due to the position of our planet, solar system in re the galactic center.
The only "calamity" of which I am aware that has possible scientific basis is the general predictions based on previous patterns of sunspots and solar flare cycles indicate 2012 as a peak year. That could irritate our computer based society more than a little but may only be the end of the world for WoW addicts.
