How did the conclusion of 'aliens did it' come to be? Has there been any contact with these 'aliens' or other entities identified as our captors?

Assume I am from a very boring reality and have no contact with mass media, and the word 'vampire' means nothing to me. Can anyone explain what the commotion is all about?

Bruce is not at 'home' while he posts his inquiries to the tablet network, having found the empty halls inexplicably claustrophobic. He'd never been entirely comfortable in that house since his parents' death, and the fire, while damn near emotionally devastating, had spared him from actually having to make the adjustment to living there long-term. Here, with its miraculous reformation, he's even more uncomfortable.

Thus he's at a coffee shop, sitting at a small table near a window, ignoring his coffee (which took him five minutes to order - why can't you just say coffee, god, what happened to modern culture while he was traveling) and staring with a sort of irritated blankness that shouldn't be possible out at the street.
