Y'know, I was just talking about that idea with Daniel a couple nights back. I was thinking of using it as more of a supplemental to solar panels/ windmills/ alternative energies with a variable input. So, say it was a cloudy day and you needed extra energy, you could just hop on the bike/treadmill/whatever.
Only problem is that yeah, like you said, the conversion rate would have to be INSANE- bike generators have been used since at least Vietnam, but to power even a lightbulb for a few hours required really heavy-duty cycling for a really long time.
Like, something to capture the audio waves from concerts and put that into energy, and something in the floor to capture the vibrations from basketball/soccer/etc?
Already on it. Admittedly, I've mostly heard about it in regards to harvesting energy from malls and other high-traffic places like that, but sports also makes sense. You just get into people bitching about how all that equipment under the floor will change the texture of the floor so they won't play as well, yadda yadda shut up we pay them too much anyway.
