Wow. I wouldn't have even thought to attempt that. I'd have just considered it my own fault for being that dumb and kept the Sony. Nor would I have had the umm.. testicular fortitude to try and return a laptop I had left on a toaster oven. Goes to show, I guess, what you can get with a little extra effort.
We recently ordered a small chest freezer online. They sent us the wrong one. Making a long story very short, when we exchanged it they didn't want the old one back. They just told us to keep it.
I think this kind of beyond-the-peal return policies are becoming more common among the really big retailers. Like the way Wal-Mart will take returns without a receipt. With the huge volume of merchandise being moved around, a slightly higher percentage of returns becomes a small price for the customer loyalty it generates.
