The only reasons I see for dark!fic for children's shows? For the lulz. Or evulz, depending on how cynical you're feeling.
But I also think it is a sense of it being "beneath" them. "It's for my children, who cares if it's crappy, or hell, even if it's good? I don't care what they watch, I just want them to shut up."
But mostly, I think people do it for the evulz.
(A side note: Animorphs? Family friendly? Not in my childhood, they weren't. ;p I loved them, but jeezus, they were a lot more violent than I remembered!)
My mum theorized that it's out of embarrassment. You know, like they liked it, but now they're too old and don't want to be associated with ever having liked it.
as for Animorphs, it definitely had a lot of canonical darker themes, but so do Labyrinth, Doctor Who, and Invader Zim. I'm not saying they're intended for toddler age kids like the other shows I was talking about, but they're still family friendly - nothing is overly graphic, no sex or swearing. They can scare you, but there's no rated R material. Animorphs could have been, though, if the writing style was directed more towards older teens.
I miss Animorphs... I'm ought to reread the series over again. XD Definitely one of the better book series I was into as a kid.
Ahahah, I guess since I started reading them when I was eight, I'm a little biased. Despite it's flaws, Animorphs was and still is amazing. And they're being re-released! I should pick up the ones that I don't have..
Are they really?? That's brilliant! I'll have to do the same. I think I'm only missing like 7 of them or so... not counting all the specials, of course.
