You know, if after Katrina, people decide to ignore a mandatory evacuation order, I, for one, don't think emergency services personnel should be risking their lives to rescue "the stalwarts". Clear out the dead bodies afterwards to prevent epidemic disease, sure. Try to rescue people too stupid to follow simple directions, no.

I hate seeing emergency services personnel die because someone decided to ignore warnings. Have you heard the joke about the guy who was sure God would save him from the floods after Katrina?

I love that joke.

I do feel sorry though for anyone who *couldnt* leave- i don't know to what extent there was help for those who had no car, or couldn't afford the gas to travel, etc, or how many of those services allowed people to bring their pets. I think in such a position, some people tell themselves and others that they are choosing to be brave, so as not to appear so weak/poor.
