So my work laptop died. I got a new one pretty promptly, but IT were all 'oooooh, no, we don't approve of you using it for personal email etc.' so that put me off for a good couple months til I realised EVERYONE ELSE USES THEIR WORK LAPTOPS FOR THESE THINGS and figured so long as I'm not doing anything dodgy, all will be fine.

Watch me get told ( Read more... )

If LJ has any advantages is it:

1. You can fail to turn up for 3 months and return to find the place is much as you left it
2. Your employer may block bookface or twitter, but would they ever bother to block LJ?

That is indeed a lot of courgettes. Perhaps next year you could try a squash you'd be happier to eat in such quantities? Watermelon perhaps, or Shark-fin melon (I've never tried those but remain curious). I successfully grew enough tomatoes to make soup and was happy enough with that. I don't know about foraging but Aldi does a sloe & juniper cider and it is nice

Is H the same H from uni days?

*desperately trying to think who H from uni days is* Nope, HR, who I met in Japan.

Next year we just plant fewer courgette plants. We massively underestimated the amount each plant produces. G isn't a fan of squash, but we night have a few, and maybe do some more green veg. Not sure how melons would cope if we got another heatwave like this year, but I am tempted.

We have so many blackberry, sloe, and rosehip bushes round here, all i have to do is go for a walk with a tupperware and i bring home enough fruit to make anything! Maybe I'll try cider one year, we have enough apples...

Hells Bells.

He looked to do a good job finding recipes for them all. I'm also not a huge fan, so I sympathise with the problem of growing so many things that you just don't want to eat. I knew a guy years ago who said that the best stuff to grow were things that was expensive to buy, like asparagus or saffron. Not sure how challenging they are though.

Best if luck if you try. I remember some friends of mine tried a bit of home brewing once, they made a couple of unobjectionable beers and then decided to try cider, because the asda smart price apple juice was pennies.... problem is, you need a different yeast and it just formed an alcoholic gel. These being uni days, I remember a home party where one of them was eating it out of a bowl with a spoon. Class.

Ohhhhhhh. Nope, H is who I lived with in Japan, who I have up to visit for a mini-holiday every year :)

Apparently G would be fine with squash, so long as it's not a mountain of butternut squash (which is the one he is less fond of, apparently just because this time of year it's EVERYWHERE). So we will probably plant some squash! Asparagus is a bit of an arse to grow - while I agree it makes more sense to grow the stuff that's not actually cheaper to buy, it's still super satisfying to grow your own potatoes. It's not exactly a waste of money, but it is a bit pointless with how cheap they are. I guess I didn't buy any strawbs all summer, so the fruit will probably work out to be the more cost-effective options.

...cider gel sounds revolting. I'll stick to fruity liqueurs for now, but apple juice is still an option. I just need to get my arse in gear before all the apples drop.
