All Good Things

Today, a friend of mine recommended LJ as an alternative to Facebook, or at least said a lot of us were retreating here. Rereading my posts of the last few years, most of which have been private and locked down as tight as I could make them, I realize I've been doing as much myself for quite a while. They've mostly been psychic screams of the 'Wow ( Read more... )

The most optimistic thing I can imagine about 2017 and beyond is that Trump will basically be a foul mouthed version of Reagan. That is to say that he won't actually do anything, but leave his cabinet to set policy pretty much exclusively, as Reagan did. I don't consider this a good thing, but any stretch of the imagination. Reagan was horrible for America, but we did survive him.

Lisa is worried that we're going to die in a nuclear holocaust. Maybe, but my approach is to go to bed every night with the assumption that I'll live through the day that follows, and keep going from there.

One non-nuked day at a time. God help us, we have voted a Cheeto into office, and he will Tweet us into the next Cold War. But such is life. We survived Nixon, we survived Cheney. Trump isn't worse, he's just more ignorant.

Well, some of us survived Reagan. Not, say, the ones who died of AIDS because he didn't think a disease that primarily struck gay people was worth spending any research money on. Or the ones who lost social services because he cut taxes and then left his successors with no way to fund needed programs.

And unfortunately, given the cabinet Trump is choosing, I don't think leaving the cabinet to set policy would help.

Yeah, well, call that grasping at the edge of the abyss with my fingernails if the best comparison I can come up with is Reagan.

"Elections have consequences"

this to me is the key. From January on when something bad happens as any consequence of our gov'ts stupidity, actively sek out and find your friendly neighborhood republicans and tell them: "You voted for these people. This is _your_ fault."
If the bad thing happens to someone who voted republican - "You deserve it."
