John’s car pulled up on the staff car park at exactly 8:15. He had dropped Ella off at his friend, Ronon’s house. Ronon had offered to help John with Ella until he found a responsible babysitter. He had been in an excellent mood all morning after a pleasant night of Rodney-filled dreams.
He jumped out of his car and grabbed his bag. He scanned the car park for Rodney’s car. It was parked at the far end of the lot. He walked towards the doors whistling an unfamiliar tune, hoping today would go more smoothly than his first.
He strolled into the staff room with a huge smile plastered on his face.
“John, man, good morning,” said Rodney’s friend Carson, currently waving him over to sit with him and Rodney. John dropped onto the chair next Rodney, who was smiling secretively at him.
“G’morning, Carson, Rodney,” Carson offered to get him coffee and he gladly accepted, wanting to talk to Rodney on his own.
“Hey, you.” Rodney had rested his arm on the back of John’s chair and was currently playing with the hair at the nape of John’s neck. Rodney swore he could hear John purring.
“You ready for your first class?” Rodney seemed concerned, remembering the trauma John went through on the previous Friday.
“Urgh, don’t remind me. I’m dreading it, Rodney,” John looked pained and Rodney contemplated kissing him, but decided against it. They were in school, after all.
“It’ll be ok, and if isn’t, I’m here for ya.”
“Thank you, Rodney.”
The principal entered the room to begin the daily staff briefing. “Good morning, everyone. I trust you all had a good weekend.” There was a chorus of `yeahs` and `nos.` John heard Carson shout, `It shoulda been bloody longer,` and he snickered quietly.
“Thank you for that, Mr Beckett.” The meeting lasted ten minutes as they ran through important announcements, special events and schedules. “Oh, and Mr Sheppard, can I see you in my office for a minute?”
John groaned, this was another thing he had been dreading. The talk with the principal. He faked a smile and nodded.
“Wish me luck,” he muttered to Rodney and Carson.
“You won’t need luck, John. You’ll be fine,” Rodney claimed. John snorted quietly and made his way to the exit. He glanced behind him quickly to see Rodney and managed to catch his subtle wink.
He walked behind Mr. Phillips, St Jefferson’s principal, nervously biting his lip. When they reached his office, Mr. Phillips opened the door for John and told him to have a seat.
“I think you know what this is about doing you Mr. Sheppard?” John nodded solemnly.
“I just want you to know, Mr. Sheppard, that the entire teaching body fully supports you. I personally think you are a very brave man, and if you have any problems with students then don’t be hesitant in coming to tell me. If any students harass you, they will be dealt with severely.”
John was so happy he almost broke down. He stood up and shook Mr. Phillips’ hand. “Thank you so much, you really don’t know how much this means to me, I’m just...oh...” John couldn’t carry on he was so overcome with emotion.
“It’s okay Mr. Sheppard. You can go back to the staff room now if you wish, there is still ten minutes left before first period.” John nodded before thanking him again and leaving the room. He wanted to run to the staff room and envelope Rodney in his arms. He couldn’t believe how happy he was.
When he entered the room Rodney stood up and walked over to him. “John, baby how did it go?”
John grinned. “It was fine. He told me that all the staff supported me and…hold on--did you just call me baby?” Rodney laughed and John blushed.
“Yeah. I did, baby. You better get used to it.”
He followed Rodney to the chairs at the far side of the room. He definitely could get used to it.
