Leonard stumbled up the stairs and unexpectedly burst out in a fit of laughter, one of his arms wrapped around Penny’s shoulders, his other arm wrapped up in a cast. He felt like he was walking on a cloud, using only Penny for support.
“Okay, Leonard. Try to stand up straight, and don’t walk so fast. You’ll break your other arm.”
Leonard mumbled, hearing only the word “fast.”
“Whhhat?” His words were slurred, blending into each other. “Wharyotalabopenny?”
Penny looked at him. “What did you say?” Leonard opened his mouth to talk again, but she quickly stopped him. “Never mind. Let’s just get you inside before you fall asleep in the middle of the stairway.”
Penny reached into Leonard’s pocket to get his keys, awkwardly supporting him with one hand.
He giggled as she reached into his front pocket. “Penny, that tickles…”
“I’m sorry, honey. Where are your keys?”
He fell silent, staring into the air, randomly touching his pockets, finally whispering, “I don’t know.”
She sighed, “All right, let’s go into my apartment.” Leonard let out a small whimper and dropped to the ground. Penny got on her knees next to him. “What’s wrong, sweetie?”
He pointed to Penny’s apartment door. “It’s too far.”
“What are you talking about? It’s only-” Penny glanced at Leonard and saw those puppy-dog eyes she couldn’t resist. She groaned, “But honey, it’s three in the morning, we can’t wake up Sheldon. He’ll kill us with his death glare.” He responded by giggling like a little kid, smiling at Penny. “Are you sure you don’t have your keys?”
Leonard moaned, closing his eyes. “You check. I’m too tired.” He chuckled. “Tiiiiired. That’s a funny word. Isn’t it a funny word, Penny? It’s funny. Tired. Funny, funny, funny. Penny rhymes with...” He paused. “Fenny. Penny rhymes with fenny. That’s funny.”
Penny giggled to herself as she searched his pockets, from his jacket to his coat to his pants. After failing to find his keys, she stood up.
“I’ll be right back, maybe I can find my emergency key.”
He whimpered again, “No, Penny! Don’t leave me!” Leonard outstretched his arms, trying to pull Penny back.
“It’s okay, sweetie. I’m not leaving you, I’m just going into my apartment for a little bit.”
“But you’re going to be so far! It’s scary out here,” he frowned.
She walked back to him and kissed him, rubbing his shoulder as she tried to make him feel better.
“I’m not going to be far, okay Leonard? I’ll come right back out. Don’t worry, no one’s going to hurt you out here.”
He nodded. “Okay.”
She rummaged through her magazines and boxes and clothes, desperately trying to find their key. When she was looking in her bedroom, she heard Leonard start humming a tune that she recognized as the Star Wars theme. Or Star Trek. Or was it Battlestar?
After another five minutes of hopeless searching, Penny let out a frustrated sigh and turned toward her door.
“How can I get Leonard to come in here?” She thought for a second and shrugged. She opened the door and smiled at Leonard, who was sitting cross-legged on the floor, directly in front of his apartment. “Leonard, honey?” He looked up and happily grinned. “Why don’t you come in my apartment?”
He staggered a bit as he stood up. “Okay.” Leonard shuffled across the hall and flopped down on the couch in her apartment.
Penny accidentally closed the door a little too loud and startled Leonard.
“Shhhhhhh!” He whispered, “Sheldon’s sleeping.”
“I’m sorry!” Penny whispered back.
She tiptoed over to the couch and took off Leonard’s glasses, setting them down on the coffee table. He opened his eyes slightly and saw a blurry person kneeling next to the couch.
“Mommy?” he mumbled. “Is that you?”
“No, honey, it’s Penny.”
He smiled, stretching out her name as he said it, “Pennnnnny…” She tried to hold back a laugh. “Penny, Penny, Penny, Penny, Penny.” He grinned at her. “Penny’s a nice name, don’t you think?”
“Sure, sweetie.”
“Penny, how come you’re blurry?”
“Oh, I-”
“My fingers feel funny.” He looked down at his hands, flexing his fingers. Penny smiled and put Leonard’s glasses back on. “Oh! Hi, Penny!”
“Hi, Leonard!” she smiled.
Leonard curled into a ball, hugging a pillow tightly. “You’re very pretty, Penny.”
“Thank you, honey, that’s really sweet.”
“Can I have a hug?”
“Aww, of course you can.” Penny leaned in and pulled Leonard into a hug, kissing his forehead.
When Penny thought Leonard had fallen asleep, she walked into the kitchen to get him some cookies to eat for when he woke up. She walked back to the couch only to find that Leonard was gone.
“Leonard?” She glanced around the room, panicking. How could he have disappeared that quickly? “Leonard, where are you?” She put the plate of cookies on the table and looked for him. While she was peeking under the tables, Leonard burst out of Penny’s bedroom, grinning. He had her scarf wrapped around his head, her sunglasses over his glasses, and one of her shirts tied around his cast. He started singing a combination of “More Than a Feeling” and “You Spin Me Right Round” while playing air guitar. She put her hand to her mouth, struggling to hold in her laughter.
“Hi, honey,” Leonard slurred.
He was gripping the doorway with his hand to keep from falling over, though he wasn’t very successful, and Penny had to run over to catch him.
She held him up with her arms. “Sweetie, I think you need to rest.”
“Nonsense. I’m fine.” He smiled. “Just fiiiiine.” He twisted out of Penny’s grasp and started crawling to the couch. He stopped at the foot of the couch and plopped down on the ground.
Penny stared down at him, whispering, “Leonard, don’t you think you’ll be more comfortable on the couch?”
“What couch?”
“The one behind you.”
“I’m already on a couch,” he mumbled sleepily. After being silent for a couple minutes, he whispered, “Penny, I don’t like this couch.”
She giggled, sitting down. “Come on up here, honey.”
He lay down next to her and Penny put his head in her lap, stroking his hair back. She leaned down and kissed him gently, and Leonard returned the kiss, softly touching her cheek. Penny yawned as her eyes got tired. She held Leonard’s uninjured arm as she fell asleep.
When she woke up, it was almost seven in the morning and Leonard had disappeared again. She looked around her apartment, in the kitchen, her bedroom, and her bathroom, but had no luck in finding him.
“Leonard, honey? Where are you?”
She walked out of her apartment and knocked on Leonard and Sheldon’s door. Hearing Sheldon’s voice say, “Come in,” she opened the door.
“Sheldon, have you seen-”
Penny looked to the couch, where Sheldon was watching Doctor Who, and saw Leonard curled up next to him, a blanket covering his body, and he was fast asleep.
“I assume you were wondering about Leonard’s whereabouts?” Sheldon asked, not looking up from the television.
She walked over to Leonard. “Yeah, is he okay?”
“I found him mumbling what sounded like an episode of Babylon 5 outside your apartment at 6:15 this morning, wearing one of your hats.” Penny sat next to Leonard and kissed his cheek. “So, what happened to his arm?”
“Um.” She glanced at Sheldon uncomfortably. “He kind of…fell off the bed.”
He looked at her, confused. “How exactly does one ‘kind of’ fall off a bed?”
Penny rolled her eyes. “He fell off the bed.”
“He fell off the bed and broke his arm? How did that happen?”
She looked down at Leonard, then back up at Sheldon. “I probably shouldn’t go into detail,” she grinned.
