Summary/AN: He should’ve known better than to put his faith in that detention. Things weren’t going to change; they were never going to change. Takes place some time after the film, Bender’s POV.

He hit the floor hard. Nails scraped at the crumbling tile, and he clawed his way across the surface. He needed to get away -- do anything.
“Get back here, you shit!”
John ignored the intense pain in his leg and clambered to his feet. Defiantly he turned his head away from his father, but it wasn’t the smartest move he could’ve made. Instantly the bigger hand struck him across the back of his skull, and he fell to the floor again.
“Shit…”
The contents of his pocket spilled onto the ground, and a small diamond earring skittered just inches from his face. A gift meant as a symbol of hope…change, new ways, and happiness.
He should’ve known better then to think like that.
His father snorted. “Teach you to put your filthy paws on my stuff. You’re a fucking idiot, Johnny.”
