That kind of makes sense..... I guess I just don't get Tonks. Didn't get her in the 5th book, didn't get her in the 6th. She seems awfully... emotionally unstable? Or perhaps I'm just shoving her in my can't-understand box... And where the hell are her parents? Why doesn't she ever spend time with them?
But it does make sense that she would have loved Remus from afar - been happy when he was happy - and then only crashed when he was miserable.
I just can't see Lupin being attracted. He's all about distant friendliness and self-protection. With Tonks, it seems like if he let her in a little bit, she would climb all the way inside and ... want to become him. Even Sirius was so self-absorbed that Lupin could hurt him without feeling like he was destroying his whole world. I just think that he would want to get afar away from Tonks as possible. I don't she how she could fit into his world without making him responsible for her, a position I imagine Lupin would fear and hate.
He'd be very afraid of it, sure, and you see his extreme reluctance in Tonks' demeanour all through the book. I think she might be able to offer him smething though, that he doesn't dare think he should try for.
And I figured out what threw me off about the whole Lupin/Tonks scene - I was thinking I was just wanting him to be so gay for Sirius he wouldn't want Tonks, and so I was dismissing my displeasure. But, no, it's that she is so desperate - that in itself is unattractive, especially for someone like Remus who doesn't generally form strong emotional attachments. No wonder he was turning her down. I'll have to reread that scene to see if someone put him on the spot, then he caved and maybe gave her a pity fuck....
