“You need to bulk up you pathetic wimp,” one of Brendon’s class mates says harshly at him.

It’s not Brendon’s fault that he was born with out being strong, its his genetics. Brendon makes a mental note to prove them wrong.

At 4:00 pm, one hour after school let out Brendon yelled to his mother, “I‘m heading for the gym”.

“Okay sweetie be safe,” his mother replied back. Oh, if only she knew the next turn of events.

Brendon steps up onto a treadmill next to a buff looking muscleman.

“I can‘t wait until I look like him,” he thinks to himself.

While on the treadmill at the local gym Brendon felt a slight pressure in his stomach. He simply ignored this and thought he needed more water and took a long drink from his water bottle.

It is now 4:30 pm, and Brendon wakes in a daze hearing nothing but sirens.

“Where am I?” He asks.

“We have a pulse,” the person in the ambulance says to someone unknown.

“Where am I?” Brendon repeats.

“We’re taking you to the hospital. You lost consciousness for some amount of time.”

Brendon notes the nametag on the paramedic in the ambulance. His name us is Ryan. Brendon drifts back into a haze of fog.

“We lost him again,” Ryan states.

The next time Brendon wakes up he’s in a hospital bed, wearing a hospital gown, with an I.D. bracelet on his wrist and an I.V. pumping a foreign liquid into his veins. When he regains some of his composure the next thing he notices is his worried yet relieved mother in the chair next to the bed.

“Oh my goodness Brendon, baby I thought we lost you!” Brendon’s mom says, while embracing her frail son in her arms.

“What happened?” Is all Brendon has the strength to say.

“Brendon what have you been eating lately?” she timidly asks.

“Erm, I don’t know. I’m doing this diet where I only eat protein, but I don’t see how that can be a bad thing becau-.” Brendon’s mom cuts him off before he can finish his sentence.

“BRENDON! Why didn’t you ask me before doing this? I mean going to the gym is okay but changing your diet?”

The doctor walks into the room.

“Hey, glad to see you’re awake Brendon. I’m Dr. Stump and I have some good news.”

“Oh please tell me!” Brendon’s mom exclaims.

“Well, your son is going to be just fine, but I need to explain what happened and why Brendon is here at the hospital.”

Dr. Stump goes on to explain that Brendon’s diet of no carbs and all protein was causing his body to react. With all the extra protein his kidneys were going into overload trying to get rid of all the excess ketones. This is the pain that he was experiencing in his stomach. The main reason you pass out is from dehydration and malnutrition. Brendon hadn’t been eating the right amount of nutrients for some time and didn’t drink enough water to meet what he needed for the amount of exercise he was doing.

“How long am I going to be here?” Brendon asks the doctor.

Before the doctor can even answer, Brendon’s mom interrupts saying, “It doesn’t matter how long you need to be here, we just want to get you better.”

“Well actually,” Dr. Stump informs them, “We can have him out by tonight, but I recommend that you have him see a nutritionist a few times a week so Brendon can learn how to bulk up in a healthy way and we don’t have to have a repeat of this incident.”

“Oh, thank you so much! You have been a big help” Brendon’s mother says happily.

“Yeah thanks for saving my life.” Brendon jokes.

“Haha, no problem Brendon” Dr. Stump says grinning.

Three months later, Brendon is doing much better. He is eating right and exercising healthfully. In the beginning, he saw the nutritionist three times a week. Now, he only sees her once a week. Brendon doesn’t plan on going to the hospital again anytime soon.
