Well if you really want to get techincal, the Beatles spawned MTV with A Hard Day's Night. The music sequences in it are considered by many to be the first music videos.
Obviously you didn't read the part where I wrote that those 'were the first thematic music videos I've seen outside of sitcoms or movies in the 60s.' You may also have missed that I clearly stated that they 'inadvertently helped' create MTV. There were scores of others involved early on, such as Elvis Presley who filmed music sequences outside of the context of a traditional musical way before A Hard Day's Night (1964). It all started with Love Me Tender (1957). If you don't believe me, check his filmography. The Beatles, who were fans of Presley's, were clearly imitating the star's habitual movie making, albeit with dry, British humor.
I will not even comment on early films, such as The Jazz Singer (1927), that helped spin the web that would eventually spawn MTV.
I was simply acknowledging that the Fab Four were the first to send reels to music shows for the sole purpose of visually showcasing that individual piece of music. So, in closing, I hate to say 'I told you so,' but...
