Phone Call

So today I got a phone call from my aunt in China.  She gave me the lecture again on why I should learn Chinese, and I gave her the same answer, “Just maybe because it’s too hard and English is so much easier” and then she said “Well you learned Korean, you can learn Chinese.”  How are they anything alike? hey, no one speaks chinese. thats like saying someone speaks jewish. buuut since you're talking about international business and what not, maybe you mean cantonese.

i'd like to learn cantonese. but hell, that whole 2gazillion characters and intonations is kind of discouraging.

Actually, mandarin is the more widely spoken language - you'd want to learn mandarin. Writing's the same, but the actual language is completely different. Cantonese is weird, especially the retarded accents. Guess that's why everyone speaks mandarin.

the mainlanders speak mandrin. cantonese is spoken in hong kong - the business hub of china. 25% of the Chinese GNP comes out of hong kong. I figure after the handover mandarin is just as pertinent, but i'd still think cantonese is the way to go.

Either way, it's too hard. If I ever decided to learn it, I'd learn mandarin, just b/c more people here speak it & my family in China speaks it. I'd rather add on to my Spanish, a language I know I'll use for sure and not sound completely retarded w/ the accents, like saying die when you meant rabbit. :)

actually...Chinese WOULD be a good language to know if you are able to do it...i agree with your aunt. and Chinese IS a language encompassing all the different DIALECTS like mandarin and cantonese along with about a dozen or so other ones...

as long as you are watching tv from 9-11 on sundays...might i suggest adding another half hour to the schedule? I heard Arrested Development on FOX at 8:30 Sunday is pretty good. I just got the DVD from someone special.
