Moving to a different site

After my blog turned into this photograph-intensive thing, I've been progressively less happy with the way that LiveJournal manages photographs (or, more accurately, mismanages photographs). The way that I worked out to post photos is this awkward multi-step process that takes kind of a long time and gives indifferent results. I've also been kind ( Read more... )

Got you added to my RSS reader.
BTW, we were out at Jenn's mom's place yesterday, rounding up stuff we wanted to "inherit" when she moves out next month; I went out into the shed where there's an area with a dirt floor. It's clear dirt and dry, and since dad died a while ago nobody's walked in there for a few months, I'd guess.

There were more ant lion traps than I've ever seen in one place. Probably up to 15 of them in a square meter.

So, it's not just here, then. This must have been a good year for them all through the state. We had dozens of them digging pits in a sandy patch near the house this year, when in the past we'd normally only see one or two. We've been feeding them regularly.

Just FYI, you apparently don't have something set up there. On Google Reader, the title reads:
Untitled Subscription
instead of "Arthropod Project" or whatever.

Thanks for the heads up. I never worked with RSS before today, so to be honest I'm surprised that it is working at all. I'll have to poke around a bit to see how I can control the title.

It's working great. I used to use fizzle (Firefox plugin) but now I'm using Google Reader (attached to my GMail account). It looks great, and it remembers what I've read no matter where I am.

You can make a syndicated account on lj so that people can just friend that rather than having to build or use another program to use the rss feed. I did it for my brothers blog (tbocheapseats) so that I could read it here.

If you want I have a permanent account and thus can create multiple syndicated feeds (I think) so I can do so for you site. I might not be able to use the exact name but if you give me shorter variations you would like I could try.

Here is the FAQ about creating them - http://www.livejournal.com/support/faqbrowse.bml?faqid=137&view=full

That sounds like an excellent idea. Thanks!
As far as shorter name variations, I think something like "backyardbugs" or "somethingscrawling" should work fine.

voila! - backyardbugs - Just friend that and each entry onto your website will turn up as a "post" in the backyardbugs journal on your friends page.

Oh - and as for the most recent post about cicadas - where did you find that the adults don't have functioning mouthparts? Cicadas actually do suck tree sap from smaller branches. The long stylet is used to puncture branches (the same way other true bugs do). I have kept them at the museum and they only live if I give them trees that there species likes to feed off of. Beyond that - one "bit" my boss (pierced him is more like it) in what we believe was an investigatory sip ... creeped him out and hurt a little but no lasting damage.

Thanks for Livejournal link to my RSS feed, it is much appreciated. I also appreciate the correction about cicada feeding habits. I confess that I neglected to check this before posting it. It was just one of those things that I *thought* I had known ever since I was a kid, and it just never came up before that I was mistaken.
At any rate, the posting is corrected now.
