We had a similar problem wit AT&T. They kept sending flyers to our address about their wonderful internet service, but then when we checked our address on their availability list, they said we couldn't have it.
We were promised 6 megabytes per second. Upon installation, we found we were getting 6 megaBITS per second. I didn't even let them finish the installation, I told them to pack up their stuff and leave. It took a while to sort out the billing, they tried to charge us $450 for early termination, and they also tried to charge us for not returning the equipment we never had.
The salesperson seemed to think that the sun shone out of AT&T's ass. He said we would be throwing away our dual-band router once their stuff was installed, because they used such awesome routers. He's also the one that promised 6 megabytes.
The actual router they were installing was crap, not dual band, single core processor, really not good at all. The installer, who actually knew his ass from a hole in the ground, laughed and agreed that their router was crap, and said that the BEST speed that we could possibly hope for if we paid them enough money was about 1/2 the speed of the slowest tier of service that the cable company provided in our area.
