I've taken a couple of lessons. It is awesome. Enjoy! Soon, you'll be buzzing sheep, and saving up money to buy yourself a P-51...

Hi Tim Again: It's OK to take flying lessons with an instructor (although I think you can't solo without a 3rd class medical) and it's OK to take a Private Pilot course. In fact, I recommend it. I studied on my own and passed with a score of 90+ but it's better to take classes. It's also OK to become a Private Pilot if you're not a US citizen. I don't know if it's OK to become a Sport Pilot and I don't know if that gives you any flying privileges in Canada.

Needless to say, pilots need to memorize a lot of bureaucratic rules. Uncle Dick

FAA 3rd Class Medical anonymous September 8 2011, 03:49:39 UTC
Hi Tim: It's good to hear you're interested in flying. I still own and fly my 180 HP Cessna although I can't fly alone any more. One piece of advice: Don't take the FAA 3rd class medical exam until you've looked at form FAA 8500-8 and are sure you'll pass. (It's on the Internet.) You must be able to answer NO to all the questions there about your medical history, traffic tickets, DUIs, etc. You can still fly Light Sport aircraft without a 3rd class medical and they're pretty capable now plus they cost less and burn less avgas - which now costs more than $5 per US gallon. My plane burns about 9 gallons or $50 per hour. Uncle Dick PS Email me any questions about flying.

HI Tim: The rules are: you must have a 3rd class medical to be a private pilot, you must obtain it thru a designated physician known as an AME (Aviation Medical Examiner), he has to report your exam to the FAA - you can't ask him to not advise the FAA if you don't pass, the FAA can ask for any conceivable additional information or tests, and, if you don't submit the additional info, you are not eligible for Sport Pilot privileges. That's the predicament I'm in; I didn't submit additional successful test data so I'm not eligible for Sport Pilot. If you say YES to any of their history questions or do anything to arouse their suspicions, they'll ask for more info or turn you down. Dick
