part of the anti masstransit is who foots the bill. the company that wants to profit doesnt want to take the risk. only the people who stand to profit off it want to foot the bill through taxes and those who think their lives dont directly benefit from it don't want their taxes to pay for it. see any venue built in any city, or almost any other venture a community used service provided by a private company.
i have a problem with the people taking the risk in funding light rail or whatever and then they having to pay some company to use the service they built and paid for just because they dont like the idea of the governemtn running anything. it would be like a company putting a toll road up on the highway your taxes paid for, and them just reaping profit, their only cost is the toll both operators. if you paid for the damn thing, you should get free use of it or at least the operator should not profit off your investment.
... but that goes against how the government works now, especially in a repulbican controleld state governemnt.
true, if it were to be tax-funded it shouldnt necessarily be free to the rider. in europe their subways and country-wide trains are all government run (even freight trains). it seems to work out very well for them. they have to pay for it but most of the profit turned goes right back into the transportation fund for better trains and more services.
