First Date

Uhura rubbed her hands together as she tried to keep warm in the cold autumn air. Gaila was running late as usual although Uhura never held it against her. Gaila was always held up by some guy trying to see if she was free on the weekend or sometimes she was trying to finish up her work in the computer lab.

Uhura stood outside of a coffee shop by the academy in a leather jacket looking at everyone who passed with curiosity to see if it was Gaila. She had on boots with a ridiculous high heel that she tapped on the sidewalk to the tune of the music that she listened to on her headphones.

Uhura perked up when she saw a flame of red hair passing the street making its way towards her. Gaila’s hair stuck out of a purple beanie and she wore Ugg boots that matched. She smiled widely at Uhura before she even reached her, excited for their day to start.

“Sorry! My prof wouldn’t stop talking and I tried to get here as soon as possible!” Gaila said a little out of breath, grabbing hold of Uhura’s cold hands in hers. Uhura removed the headphones from her ears and put them in her purse.

Uhura smiled kindly, grasping her hands tighter, “You’re always late. I’m used to it.”

“I shouldn’t be late for this!” Gaila said pouting. Uhura hesitantly nodded in agreement trying not to make Gaila feel too bad.

This was their first date and it had taken them a while to get there. After lots of flirting, and nights of heartache spent wondering if the other liked them back they’d finally made it here. Not to mention that Starfleet homework and classes made it impossible to plan a day when they both were free from interruptions.

They agreed on just spending the day in the downtown area by the school. Neither of them could really agree on a good spot for a date, not to mention they were both broke. They started walking down the street close together as they began to look in the shop windows.

They walked into a tea shop and Gaila liked the hot pink tea cups that had witty phrases painted on them. Uhura chuckled at them, and Gaila felt warm at the sound of her laughter. Uhura’s boots made sharp sounds against the old floor of the shop.

“Those boots are seriously hot, Nyota.” Gaila said lifting an eyebrow making Uhura stop and blush even though they were only talking about footwear.

“Thanks,” Uhura said wishing she thought of something more playful to say.

“But seriously, how can you walk in them?” Gaila said tilting her head like a curious puppy.

“Well, practice and also not walking in slippers every day.” Uhura joked pointing to Gaila’s Ugg boots that were silent across the floor. “I thought you said you were interested in fashion, and yet you wear those.”

“What?” Gaila laughed trying to act surprised that Uhura hated her boots. “They’re cute!”

“Hmm...” Uhura stated, “Only on you,” grabbing hold of Gaila’s hand and squeezing it. Gaila squeezed back clicking her heels to show her happiness.

They made their way to the other shops on the street. They held hands and walked closely as they looked into the window displays. Their cheeks squishing close together as they admired what the stores had to offer.

They sat down inside the coffee shop that Uhura waited by at the beginning of the day. Gaila ordered something that was sugary sweet with whip cream on top while Uhura ordered a black tea with milk. They sat down at a table, happy to relax and rest their feet.

“Oh, look dim lighting, so romantic,” Gaila said pointing to the lights above them and waggling her eyebrows. Uhura giggled and responded, “Actually, I don’t think they’ve replaced the light above us, darling.” She nodded her head to a light that was flickering over their heads.

They sat quietly for a while trying to think of something witty or clever to say to interest one another. Uhura’s eyes wandered Gaila’s form as she sipped her drink. Gaila had taken her hat and coat off inside the shop. She wore a low cut pink sweater and had on multiple bracelets, rings and earrings to decorate herself with. Uhura’s eyes strayed too long on Gaila’s bosoms, her eyes guided by a necklace that was settled in between her breasts.

“Do you like my sweater?” Gaila asked batting her eyelashes making Uhura’s face go warm and look away quickly. Gaila laughed at her bashfulness, “You’re allowed to look! This is a date!” Uhura smiled feeling awkward that she had been caught but Gaila held her hand in reassurance.

Gaila took another sip of her drink, her upper lip covered in whip cream. “Oh, you got a little...” Uhura said pointing to her own upper lip; Gaila looked at her in question. “On your lip you have whip cream.” Gaila’s pink tongue reached up out of her mouth but she kept missing the cream.

“Help me get it off, Nyota.” She said smiling slyly. Uhura didn’t get the hint at what she wanted and grabbed a napkin. “No, no! C’mon Nyota, kiss it off me!”

Uhura’s eyes widened looking around at the tables of people. “You know how I feel about PDA, Gaila.”

“Oh hoho, I do.” Gaila laughed thinking back to all the times Uhura sneered at couples making out in the academy hallways. Uhura lifted a judging eyebrow at what Gaila was asking of her.

“Y’know that moustache is becoming really cute and it kind of suits you so I may just leave it there.” Uhura said putting down the napkin and picking up her own drink, sitting back in her chair.

“Aww, you’re no fun, Ny!” Gaila said pouting, looking up at Uhura with puppy dog eyes.

“I am plenty fun.” Uhura said drinking her tea.

Gaila scowled grabbing the napkin from where Uhura had put it down. Uhura sighed deeply feeling bad that she wasn’t being adventurous, watching Gaila fold the napkin before using it. Gaila’s head was quickly lifted by Uhura’s hand that now was holding her chin. Uhura leaned over and kissed her before she could have any second thoughts. Gaila made a muffled moan and her tummy dropped in pleasure. Uhura kissed fiercely trying to get off all the cream, her hand moving from her chin to grasp Gaila’s hair. Gaila’s hand reached up to Uhura’s shoulder and she held her tightly. Gaila’s mouth tasted super sweet making Uhura smile. This was their first kiss together and they weren’t eager to end it.

Uhura separated their mouths and they both breathed heavily. Gaila opened her eyes smiling widely while Uhura slowly opened hers still feeling dizzy from the kiss. Uhura sat back down and looked around at the people to see if anyone was starring.

“No one’s looking, Nyota.” Gaila stated looking into Uhura’s eyes. It was true everyone had kept to their own business and was swept up in their own conversations. “Must be this romantic lighting, it’s great for privacy,” Gaila said and Uhura smiled back feeling relieved.

They walked out of the shop ready to part ways and end their date. “This was a great day, Nyota.” Gaila said grabbing hold of her hands as they stood outside where it had begun to snow. “Glad, you liked it,” Uhura said wishing it could keep going. “I got you something...” She reached into her purse and pulled out a box.

“Are you proposing?” Gaila said laughing and sounding surprised.

“No, open it!” Uhura said rolling her eyes and handing it over. Gaila looked at her in confusion and opened the top of the box. She pulled out its contents and held in her hand one of the hot pink tea cups from the first store.

“Oh! I love it! It’s adorable, thank you!” Gaila hugged her and Uhura giggled. “We can have tea parties now.” Gaila said smiling at the cup.

“Haha, sure, that sounds great. I’ll make the tea though, because you probably put loads of sugar in it.” Uhura said, Gaila made a shocked face at her and then smiled.

“You’re sweet Nyota, thanks for everything.” Gaila said giving her a lingering kiss.

“You too, thanks,” Uhura smiled and moved a stray hair from Gaila’s face. The snow dusted their hair and eyelashes and they squeezed one another’s hands before letting go and parting ways. They walked to their different bus stations while the memories of their first date played over in their head as they made their way home.
