Ok, here's the deal. I had an Oreck and it worked really well - expensive, but it did the job. But once I got the dog, it didn't even come close to sucking up the doggie hairs.
I now have a Dyson - the kind that's advertised as being excellent for pet hair pickup and it's awesome. The floor REALLY looks vacuumed after I'm done, and it doesn't have a bag, it has a canister that lifts off and dumps out.

Oh, and I also got mine off overstock.com - I got a refurbished one for a decent amount....but it would be worth full price, in my humble opinion.

Honestly, Dyson is the one I'd been seriously considering, but I really know NOTHING about vacuums, so I don't know how to tell the hype from the reality. I don't know how to know which features will matter to me.

So hearing this endorsement for Dyson gives me some hope that I might be looking in the right direction.

Thanks, LoracJ! :)

I can also highly recommend overstock.com - you can get a new vacuum there too - and the prices are totally reasonable.

In my opinion, you don't really need a lot of fancy features, unless you plan on certain specific vacuuming duties. Regular and normal vacuuming sounds like what you want it for.....
My Dyson's handle extends and has the attachments on the body of the vacuum, which is a plus. And I can also endorse the canister that removes for dumping as opposed to the bags.

I don't know much and I definitely don't know about cleaning up after cats, but I've heard the miele vacuum is really good:

Thank you!

I'll definitely check into it.

Plus, I love your icon! You're on vacation already, right? My last day was last Thursday. And I have done pretty much nothing since then. It's been LOVELY. (Well, all right, I DID go in to work on Monday to finish all of the cleanup and stuff that I hadn't had a chance to do on Thursday, and I was even there for about 7 hours (without getting paid for it!!), but it's still been nice.

I woke up this morning and realized that I really had no idea which day of the week it was. It was AWESOME!

How's your summer starting out?

Actually, today was my last day. Yup. We went until the bitter end. But today it's sort of a joke. The kids got their report cards on Friday. So not all show up today. It's only a half a day and they can come clear accounts, etc.

But I picked up the baby from the babysitter. Cranked up the A/C and am reveling in the thought of summer vacation.

I've had a Dyson for years. It's been great- even with some very nasty post-hurricane and post-hurricane construction cleaning. Nothing I ever had before even came close.

As I said in response to loracj's comment, I'd actually been leaning toward a Dyson, but without really knowing anything about them. So the recommendations help.

I just wish that I knew which features should matter to me, y'know? Sigh. More research to do.

Thanks again for your help. :)

You're welcome and good luck. I know Dyson markets one of their models, or did, as more of a "pet" vacuum, but my neighbor has a dog that sheds like crazy a couple times a year and loves to borrow mine, which is the only model I thought existed. Yeah, I'm informed! It was the only model in the store and I knew the brand was good because most of my friends used it, and I needed one ASAP. It was an instant, no-brainer purchase for me.

No real advice, just that I'd sell a kidney for a Dyson.

And Dean Winchester doesn't vacuum - he just tells the dust "Move."

Ha!

=D

You are SO right! And I'd bet that sometimes he doesn't even have to SAY it to the dust; he just gives it a LOOK, and the dust KNOWS it's supposed to move. :)

You're awesome.
