Assuming it wasn't some kind of misunderstanding (e.g. they didn't know why you were saying the place sucked, and you were being vague explaining it), then no, you weren't being unreasonable imo.

It was definitely not vague. It also wasn't the first conversation we'd had about it.

I think it would have been ok to say something like, If they were openly racist would you still want to eat there? I often find that making the same analogy with race instead of sexuality helps people understand homophobia better. But you definitely did the right thing! And I'm glad they changed.
