I live nowhere near Texas, but think you have a great idea, and hope you find some Texas Tea friends!

Alas, I used to live in Austin, but am now far far away. However, I'm going to put in a plug for the Tea Embassy in Austin. It's a fabulous family-owned store. They also sell online, and I still order most of my loose tea from them. Even if you'll be living in the metroplex, it's worth visiting Austin...

I'm actually going to Austin in December. Any other recs for other tea places I should visit?

The other one I went to is now closed. Aside from samples, the Tea Embassy doesn't serve tea. If you want to sit down and have food and tea, you might try The Steeping Room in north Austin.

I'd hit up Steepster tea community if you haven't already, might have better luck

I need some new local tea friends, too - alas, I no longer reside in Texas... Hope you find some suitable tea-mates!

That sounds like a wonderful idea. Too bad you aren't moving someplace close to me instead of to Texas.
