Ah Flytie - what can I say.... well, we are in the Silvia Trkman Foundations class and that is great. AND, very difficult. We are so far behind in general training, so some of the class work is challenging ( Read more... )

PLAY THIS!!! nosemovie October 31 2013, 15:18:22 UTC
I swear! it helps!! and so many of my students in Teen Dog class have this same problem and they didn't have leash lock down, so you can't feel bad. I think it's often a function of age and maturity...

but... try this game and let me know what you think. Three of the SAME toys please... really doens't work with three different toys.

Looks great, thanks! - but where's the third toy come in? I only saw two toys, did I miss something? And yes, getting Flyte to switch toys is not easy for her... so this will be great. I think we might have to put the balls down for a while till she learns more self control. I will work this!

yes! there's a second video where three toys (balls this time) can be used. Start with this, then you work up to three toys when you get outside.

I like tuggy things to start with. It helps the connection.

Oh, and I blogged about this ad nauseam some time last spring I believe? It's all there, possibly right around april/may. If you want me to look?

Another random piece of the puzzle ... and not sure this does or does not apply since my brain is fuzzy so take it with a grain of salt ;) ... how much have you done with collar grabs and/or nose touches to the hand ( ... )

I do nose touches, the issue is when she has a ball, or stolen toy, she could not give a shit about me, I can throw another toy around, offer my hand, run away, and on and on, and she just goes lalalala.... I do lots of releasing her back to play, though when I finally get her after her running amok, i guess it's hard to release her again.

Thanks for the commiseration....

This is the exact response I get with Peach when she does her pasture runs. She is balls to the wall to the farthest point, and just doing laps, with a few sniffy / peeing sessions out there. NOTHING I do or say gets her attention, BUT when she does acknowledge me again, she comes running back at full force, and we're fine.

I'll be interested to read through more responses - because I can't even *get* Peach to know I exist when she's in that moment - which makes any recall worthless.

What I have found might be working, is I leave her. I go in the house, hide in the shop, etc, and her outruns are getting shorter in time/distance. This has just started happening, so I am not sure if it's a long term thing, but ...

Any chance you can do this in areas where you can hide from her? Hikes in the forest?

I can relate to this because Enzo didn't have a recall for a long time. Now I pretty much trust that she will come back. And if she doesn't, someone else has a new pet ( ... )

Great reply! Flyte does like food, though it doesn't trump stealing the ball, toy whatever when she's in the mood. Though maybe something spectacular would work.

As for Enzo - I got one of those! Teague will bring ANYTHING as a toy and put it on me. Please throw this, please, now, please, throw, please, ahhhhhh. When we are in the hot tub, he will bring everything he thinks could be a toy and ask us to throw it from the hot tub. We end up with all sorts of things lined up on the backside of the tub. He's even brought firewood and tried to heave it in.

As for the Cricket team - hahaha :)

Problem one would be helped if you taught a formal retrieve. Freddie had the issue of taking the toy and not bringing it back, but the formal retrieve fixed that issue.

Problem two, if you are not already, have her jump from a sit (close to the bar) so she has to use her rear to propel herself over the bar. How much rear-end awareness have you done with her. Back up, back up stairs, all four feet in a little itty-bitty bowl, rear end targeting. I think the multi wraps really helped Hi-Fi use his rear as well. Just some suggestions.

Contacts, take your time to decide, you have plenty of time. At least go for a running a-frame and if you are doing that you should go for a running dogwalk too;) The Dawn Weaver method is pretty simple so far, I have started step one and we are half way through it in just a few days. Run I say;)

No hurry and no comparing, that advice has saved my sanity.

Thanks - okay, formal retrieve, haven't taught that, obviously.

Okay, sitting to jump - I didn't do that! That is really important I suspect :) - see, these are the things you don't get without at least some sort of teacher.

Contacts - oh, I know I want to do running. I always planned on a running AF given her leg, and I thought doing the running DW makes sense. It was more the way to train it. What I wasn't sure about was the method. I don't know anything about Dawn Weaver's method - why did you choose that versus Silvia's? Are you allowed to talk about it? Did you take a blood oath :)?

Thanks for the reminder about comparing - no one else has a flytie bear.... good reminder.

She is real! And cute! And fast! I am so glad that she is able to run and train now. And to steal balls and not come back. So happy that she can be a rebellious teenager now. (And I have no training advice since I now live with a groveling imp so I have no credibility at this point. Just enjoy the process since there is no rush at all.)

Hahaha! You do have an Imp - I think that will be a great dog name - Imp is great. And yeah, the groveling imp - which is awesomely cute. And yeah, I have to love that she can be a rebellious teenager - better than not being a teenager at all.
