The power was out. In a place like this, the power wouldn't just go out without good reason. And even then? There'd be a back-up generator for occasions like this. Which meant that something was seriously wrong. Haylie was having another bout of insomnia due to energy build-up once again, which meant she was awake and doing push-ups on the floor of ( Read more... )

He'd been asleep when his door was kicked open, startling him and making him jump upright in the bed instantly. It also caused an arc of electric energy to shoot forth, blowing up the microwave beside the man that kicked in his door. Then Spencer saw the gun and panicked, another electric burst hitting the man dead center of the chest and dropping him as his body twitched ( ... )

"Spencer?!"

Flicking her wrist, Haylie sent one of the operatives flying through a wall as she called out. Skidding across the floor in her bare feet, she didn't bother stopping to check around corners for any more danger because she was just too damn focused on finding Spencer. And she'd been praying to God that he wasn't the one who'd been shot.

However, the sight of his door having been kicked in and the numerous signs of electrical outbursts crushed those hopes. The bodies on the floor only added to her panic and when her eyes fell upon Spencer's body and the blood beginning to pool beneath him, she went white.

"Spencer!" Haylie screamed - she never let her emotions get this much control over her to allow an outburst like this - and felt the strange burn of tears in her eyes as she fell to her knees and carefully rolled Spencer onto his back.

"Oh God. Spencer..."

The noise of someone crashing into the wall startled him a touch, and he tried to concentrate enough on getting his hand up, and pulling some power to it, but nothing happened at all and Spencer just lay there until his shoulders were touched softly and he was carefully rolled over.

"I- hmm," the pain in his gut was steadily growing and he had to wonder if this was it, because that was what went through your mind when you got shot, wasn't it? Logically, he was aware that it was a fairly unobtrusive shot; nothing vital in the area, probably busted his stomach or intestines or something, no blood in his mouth meant his lungs were free and clear, so really, it was just the pain. Oh, and the blood loss. "I got shot."

It's the only thing that popped to his mind, looking up at Haylie with a dazed, pain filled expression. He was only meant to be a public relations on the base, he was only meant to sharpen up with his skills and write about the mutants helping the Government. He wasn't meant to get shot.

"It really hurts a lot."

"No shit, Sherlock. The bloody hole in your gut wasn't exactly subtle." Haylie snapped a little more harshly than she'd meant to but right now her control was slipping and her emotional attachments were overriding her years of training. And it was pretty damn annoying.

Taking a deep breath, she took a moment to box up the emotions and once she was satisfied, opened her eyes. She slid closer to Spencer, careful not to aggravate his wound as she checked his pupils, pulse, and breathing before getting to her feet.

"I need... I need... damnit, Haylie. Focus." Running a hand through her hair, she paced back and forth before bolting into the bathroom and grabbing towels. Lots of towels. Once she returned to his side, she began ripping them into smaller chunks.

"Listen, Spencer. I have to roll you onto your good side for a second, so just focus on letting me move you." Thank god for enhanced strength, because it allowed Haylie to shift Spencer effortlessly in order to check for any sign of an exit wound.

He didn't respond, far too caught up in trying to remember everything that was going on. His head was jumbled and messed and all that kept springing up was 'I've been shot' over and over and over again. And boy, he was not going to be telling his family about this one, at all. Least of all his mother.

Picking up what Haylie was saying, that she was going to move him, he nodded slightly, "Okay, okay." He wasn't sure how badly that one would hurt, keeping his hands over his stomach where the blood was still flowing out.

As she shifted him, he groaned slightly, wincing as his muscles were pulled and the wound was aggravated. This was far from pleasant.

"Spencer, talk to me. What happened?" Haylie breathed a huge sigh of relief as she saw that the wound had been a through-and-through. Now, she didn't have to worry about the bullet being lodged against a vital organ or tearing an artery. She wanted to get him talking, take his mind off of the bullet wound in his gut.

Laying him back carefully, she laid Spencer's head in her lap as she ripped open his shirt and began pressing towels over his wound to slow the bleeding until she could get an extra set of hands.

A warm hand gently brushed some hair out of his eyes as she soothingly stroked his hair in an effort to keep him calm. "Talk to me, kid."

Liv walked in and knelt down on the other side of the man, rubbing both her hands dry on her shirt. They were a little too sweaty. All this blood, that wasn't good. Barely resisting to slap herself for feeling dizzy she looked at the man, then Haylie.

"I can patch you up, but it will hurt. I have to accelerate your body's own healing process, it will be quick but I'm not a magician, the pain will still be the same-just accelerated. A minute and it's over, you up for that?"

It was hard to focus on anything never mind what had happened. "There was...there was a man." Holy hell, he'd killed someone. He'd actually killed a man with his powers. He'd panicked and his powers shot out and he'd electrocuted someone.

And then he'd gotten shot. That was...that was self-defence, right? That counted as protecting himself? Not even Haylie's soft petting really brought his mind back from that realisation. At least not until there was another voice there to focus on suddenly. Heal it? She was going to just heal it?

"Just a minute?" He could handle that, a minute of pain he wouldn't be bleeding to death anymore, that sounded like a fair enough deal. Raising a hand, catching Haylie's knee, Spencer gave a small nod, "O-okay, I- yeah, okay."

"I know. They broke into your room and scared you. It's not your fault." Haylie cooed softly, petting Spencer's hair. She didn't know details, but she knew Spencer. He wouldn't kill anyone. This had to have been out of fear. Her free hand over his wound clenched slightly as the traumatic memories of the man she killed when her powers manifested came flooding back to the surface.

Squeezing her eyes shut, she began to tremble until Olivia and Spencer's voices brought her back.

She lifted her hand from Spencer's wound and intertwined her fingers with his, looking down at him brokenly. She could barely keep it together at this point. "Just squeeze my hand as hard as you want, it won't hurt me. Zap me if you need to; just keep looking at me. Focus on my face. You can do this."

"Alright then."

Placing her hands on both sides of the wound she closed her eyes and concentrated. She had healed a gunshot wound before and it had been on herself, but the trick always worked the same and was one of the easier ones. She just had to speed up the body's own healing process, which worked perfectly fine even before she had done a bit of studying on that subject. It was mainly intuitive for her and since she just had to work with what was there she pictured it as someone pushing a fast forward button.

As soon as her hands came in contact with his stomach she was flooded with information, she saw what was injured and where-concentrating on the insides first she stopped the bleeding to heal the wound from the inside out.

Oh, my God.

Spencer had once broken his shoulder, he had been nine and it had been on the farm and he'd had to walk over three miles to the doctor before it could be set and even then, it had been painful. He'd had his appendix out too, it had ruptured and nearly debilitated him at the time. That had been just as sore.

But this? There was no way to compare either points in his life with this. She'd warned him, sure, but bracing for pain was never easy. He tried to keep his eyes on Haylie, like she'd said, tried to focus. But again, it was hard when all he wanted to do was scream.

His fingers clenched against hers, a light course of electricity dancing over their hands but not going anywhere. He wasn't about to let it jump through her body like it had the soldiers. "Shit, God." Hopefully the minute was almost up.

"You're doin' great, Spencer. Hang in there just a little longer. Everything is gonna be okay."

The words were riddled with concern, uncertainty, and brokenness but her eyes showed that she still had some fight in her, even though her spirit was weakening. Spencer's fingers and the electricity hovering around her hands, however, gave her something more important than her own issues to focus on.

But the sound of footsteps approaching the room along with the echo of a single gunshot caught her attention and had her stiffening.

"Dane?! What's happenin' out there?!"

Hearing her name, or her last name at least, Lorna glanced up, looking towards Haylie while pushing her barrier forward and trying to lock it in place over the door to the stairs. "It's under control." For right then, it was. She could hold them in place for now, hopefully they wouldn't break out anything explosive, and the other two could deal with the gunshot victim.

She just had to keep her eyes open on anyone coming from the other direction. Holding a hand up towards the door helped her nail the magnetic forcefield in place, giving her a stable point to focus the energy on, while she tried to keep her training to the front of her mind.

Emma probably wouldn't be pleased if she screwed this up, so Lorna would prove to Emma that she was ready, whatever it was Emma brought her here for, she was ready. "I've got this, you just deal with that."

"The second you can't, you let me know." Haylie's voice had an almost inhuman kind of sharpness as she briefly made eye contact with Lorna. Flames seemed to be dancing around her blue eyes, but they disappeared soon after once her focus turned back to Spencer and Olivia.

Glancing over at the red-haired mutant, Haylie watched her briefly and gave Spencer's hand a light squeeze. "How much longer, Hughes?"

Liv was content with her work, the internal injuries had healed and everything was where it belonged. It had taken up quite a bit of energy but she knew she could do it without passing out. She had to.

"Not much, I just need to close up the wounds now or he'll walk around with a hole in his stomach." she said through clenched teeth.

Now came the part she liked most when using her mutation like that and she was pretty sure she wouldn't tire of seeing it any time soon-though of course she didn't hope anyone got injured like that again. The flesh pulled itself together and she watched with a grin as new skin began to grow where moments ago had been a gaping hole. As the skin began to smooth and turn from an intense red to light pink to it's normal color she felt her head spin a little and let go as soon as it looked like nothing had happened.

To prevent herself from falling over she put both hands on the ground and waited a moment before the room stopped spinning.

Haylie couldn't believe her eyes. It was as if he'd never been shot. He was okay. Oh, God, he was okay. Letting go of his hand, she ducked her head and let out a ragged breath because she was sure any more of this and she'd throw up. Haylie could handle trauma situations like this - it came with the EMT training - but it was Spencer and she was terrified that he was going to die.

So when it was over, she squeezed her eyes shut and took a moment to collect herself after a stray tear escaped her eyes and fell onto Spencer's face.

"Hughes, you alright?"
