read the AMAZING story here

be gone - brand new
it's getting hard to stand up
I think I can hear God calling my name
He'll try to make my heart break
but I was told you'd call me tonight

the fact that this is played in reverse is just a good, creepy opening, and the way that both inception and lost play with time and space, going backwards and forwards? maybe i'm too metaphorical.

dead & gone - t.i. (feat. justin timberlake)
I've been travellin' on this road too long (too long)
Just tryna find my way back home (back home)
The old me is dead and gone, dead and gone
...
I ain't never been scared, I lived through tragedy
Situation could've been dead lookin' back at it
Most of that shit didn't even have to happen
But you don't think about it when you out there trappin'
...
Get locked up then didn't even get mad
Now think about damn what a life I had
Most of that shit, look back, just laugh
Some shit still look back get sad

i admit, i'm a big fan of rap/hip-hop. i like this song for a lot of reasons, but i also see this as sayid's theme song, sort of.

we killed it - say anything
With flashes of you maturing into stage,
flawless masterpieces built of dreams I swore were memories.

And I dream, I dream, I dream..

I stole the ocean and filled up the sky
Put out the sun on the day that we died,
The former, the latter, and all in between,
They were vanquished by looking a fiend.

Do you remember me, do you remember me?
The one that you loved when he set you free.
Do you remember me, do you remember me?
The one with who you fell beneath the sea.

since this is a lost/inception crossover, i was definitely looking for a song that would straddle both worlds. also, max bemis writes a song like nobody's business.

rules don't stop - we are scientists
Don’t be alarmed
It’s not the end of the world
If we’re breaking the rules it’s fine
I disregard this kind of problem all the time

It’s not as if it’s gonna kill anyone
If there’s no victim then there’s no crime
Just draw another if you think we’ve crossed the line
...
Rules don’t stop me
Forget about it
Rules don’t stop me
We’ll get around it

there are rules in the lost and inception universes, and the fact that they actually play well together made me choose this song. also, it has sort of an 80s vibe, and reminds me of lost in general. it's another sayid song, in my opinion.

one day, robots will cry - cobra starship
Cause people change
Can't you see my eyes
Are they not the same after the lies?
I know I'm like a machine
But i still have dreams
I know one day we will...

Sleep for days
Come over, come over
I won't make the same mistakes
Come over, come over
I'm dying not to hurt you
In our dreams, we can be complete
If we go to sleep we can wake up home again

creepy, creepy song. sort of fits the atmosphere. also, the first line is 'this won't hurt more than a pinch', which is what i think of the PASIV device.

in for the kill - la roux
They say we can love who we trust
But what is love without lust?
Two hearts with accurate devotions
And what are feelings without emotions?

sayid/shannon, definitely. a little sad, of course, but their relationship was a little sad.

camera talk - local natives
We're running through the aisles
Of the churches still in style
Does this city have a curfew?
Don't you know it's good to see you too

The riders on the Champs Elysees
We are the tourists in the cafes
We drank our wine along the river
Not believing where we were at all
...
And even though I can't be sure
Memory tells me that these times are worth working for

a dream song, just to situate the inception world in the story. this is ariadne's song, because creating dreams from research and photos still doesn't create a real space, just as looking at pictures and remembering doesn't really bring the memories back.

dreams - faye wong (cover)
Oh, my life is changing everyday,
In every possible way.
And oh, my dreams, it's never quiet as it seems,
Never quiet as it seems.

I know I've felt like this before, but now I'm feeling it even more,
Because it came from you.
And then I open up and see the person falling here is me,
A different way to be.

this is the cantonese cover of the cranberries "dreams". yes, i chose some english lyrics because i think this is the story's theme song.

hard to explain - the strokes
Was an honest man
Asked me for the phone
Tried to take control

Oh, I don't see it that way
I don't see it that way

Oh, we shared some ideas
All obsessed with fame
Says we're all the same

the opening of the fic has saito practically manipulating cobb into taking the job, setting down the easiest path for him to follow. this mix doesn't necessarily follow the story, but this could be saito's and cobb's conversation. also, yay the strokes. one of my favourite bands.

late night rendezvous - the empires
We're indiscreet.
You look and I turn the other way to meet your ghost.
You come pushing it away.
My favorite role's the late night meeting at your door
Nobody knows. My good nature's indisposed.
...
And dim the light. I am a stranger passing by.

this is eames posing as nadia and also fits quite well with the scene of shannon showing up as a 'ghost memory' of sayid's.

it's hard to say 'i do', when i don't - fall out boy
I speak fast and I'm not gonna repeat myself, no
So listen carefully to every word I say:
"I'm the only one who's gonna get away with making excuses today,

You're appealing to emotions that I simply do not have"
...
When I said that I'd return to you I meant more like a relapse
Now and again I think "His and her's" "For better or worse"
But the only ring I want buried with me are the ones around my eyes

another sayid song, but also a 'return to the island' song, this would go good with the scene where the island gets 'filled out' with sayid's memories. it's a good 'intermission' song.

cherchez le garçon - taxi girl
Cherchez le garçon,
Trouvez son nom
Cherchez le garçon.
...
Réveil tragique succède,
Un sommeil sans rêve,
La forme de son corps
Ne veut rien dire pour moi.

find the man
find his name
...
a successful tragic awakening
or a dreamless sleep
his body means nothing to me.

it would have just been too cheap to find 'la mer' and put it in the mix, so i found a song that fit the story a little better. my translation is not very poetic, sorry about that. the song is actually about seeking someone out and finding him either asleep or dead in a movie theatre.

the one - the like
I'll stop here
I'll stay there
I'll never be
The one you love

this song just sounds like it fits; it's not very lyrically connected to the story, but i like the sound of it.

i was wrong - the morning benders
But I've been waiting too patiently
for life to turn its back on me and
not just go my way

All down the line
it's hard hard to believe
that we ever lived apart
Sometimes a girl can make you forget
we've been alone since the start

There's no fate
like a healthy break
Now I've got
no heart left to ache

another sayid/shannon song. fits when ariadne first sees them together, and sees how happy they are, not even knowing what it all meant.

the immortals - kings of leon
Spill out on the streets of stars
Ride away
Find out what you are
Face to face

The windows are
The perfect picture
They're always changin
Go on get lost
Jump in the waters
when they are raging

i like the sound of this song, and also, i think this is the team's theme song.

look where we've landed - the mood
it's been a long time since ive seen you
i really meant it when i wished you well
i don't think that we should ever go back
to the way things used to be
i'm happy right now where we're standing,
standing where we used to be

this is a song about a break up, but the lyrics i chose said to me 'in the past', and that could be the island, or it could be what the team thinks about inception. i like the ambiguous nature of the song.

dead head blues - lightspeed champion
Nothing seemed to be happening
Except a shift from your world
A desert walk, and a sandstorm
A ball of dirt in my throat

another song where all the lyrics don't really fit, but the mood of the song fits the mood of the story.

i'll believe in anything - wolf parade
Give me your eyes
I need sunshine
Give me your eyes
I need sunshine
Your blood
Your bones
Your voice
and your ghost

We've both been very brave
Walk around with both legs
Fight the scary day
We both pull the tricks out of our sleeves

i love wolf parade, and their record apologies to queen mary is possibly one of my favourites of the past five years or so. this song is powerfully good, and is a sayid/shannon song if i ever heard one. ... i totally ship sayid/shannon.

real world - all-american rejects
I woke up on this side
I thought it was a dream
At first we learned to walk
Then learned to scream
...
This cant be the real world now
I don't believe it
When I can't see the truth
Welcome to the real world now
...
I look for some hope in every face that has a vacant stare
The shadows come but no one seems to care
The darkness floods every light that promised change
She passed sound asleep when the blood is stain the blood is pain

definitely a dream song, about dream share in general, and about sayid's dream world specifically.

cosmic love - florence & the machine
And in the dark, I can hear your heartbeat
I tried to find the sound
But then it stopped, and I was in the darkness,
So darkness I became

The stars, the moon, they have all been blown out
You left me in the dark
No dawn, no day, I'm always in this twilight
In the shadow of your heart

I took the stars from our eyes, and then I made a map
And knew that somehow I could find my way back
Then I heard your heart beating, you were in the darkness too
So I stayed in the darkness with you

hey, i really like sayid/shannon. do you blame me? also, if you've ever seen lost, these lyrics are exactly what happened in the series, anyway. so there.

end of a spark - tokyo police club
Under our bed, a monster lives
We fight his teeth with superglue and paper clips
Mark the end of an age
The way that your handwriting changed
We should always pretend
Well, you just start and I'll say when

another song about dreams. the team being the monster under the bed. sayid doesn't really 'fight' them, but his own subconscious fills out the world, and that is its own problem.

don't look back - she & him
Orpheus melted the heart of Persephone, but I never had yours
I followed you back to the end of the path, but I never found the door

orpheus the god of sleep, and this song sounds like it should have been on the lost soundtrack anyway. i think this fits the end of the story pretty well.

big bang, fanmix, inception
