With my current agency, the keys were to schedule an interview in person -- bear in mind, they could ask for an interview on-the-spot -- and to follow up every Monday morning with an "I'm ready to work!" call.
This. Make sure someone knows your face, and call-in at least once a week.
If your original booker doesn't get you jobs after a few weeks, have the receptionist hand you off to any in-office booker when your original booker can't pick up the phone.
Well, agencies aren't bad, and the advice you've received thus far is good. Bear in mind that many do place fake ads just to get a nice crop of resumes to pick through and then have people available and ready to go. So it isn't all just you. On the other hand, Kelly Services found me my job.
I would stay away from Office Team and Primesource. Bad experiences with both.
Randstad is a pain. They always kept insisting I lived in the city when I don't. Their reply was "our computer says you are so you are" and I got charged local tax. I bought a map that proves I'm not in the city. I won't work for them again.
Yup, agree with all the advice you've had - it's important to make sure you keep to the forefront of their mind when they receive vacancies, so make sure you stay visible. Ring, email, pop into the office - and make sure that when you do you'r personable, friendly, keen.
I've temped successully many times, and I've put my CV in with several agencies that I never ever heard from after the initial burst of interest - it's all a bit of a crapshoot sometimes. Good luck!
