I found the position on Craigslist, and they listed a company email address that we should apply to (rather than the typical gibberish Craigslist ones), along with a specific person, X. I sent my resume and cover letter, and got back an email saying that this

Yep, just send it along to Y with the name changed on the cover letter, too. I was just on the reverse of that situation-- My boss was on vacation last week and her email was forwarded to me, and I was writing back and calling people saying "I'm replying to you because X is on vacation." and it was no big deal.
