Hope was freed with no real explanation. She assumed this meant they found her innocent of any wrong doing but didn’t bother to ask. The moment they opened her cell door and told her she could go, she fled. She had never known anything as terrible as solitary confinement. Hour after hour in a tiny little room with nothing to occupy her mind, it was hell. She had to have something to occupy her mind, but in the brig there had been nothing but the occasional visit from Atticus and thank God for those otherwise she would’ve gone mad.
Right now, she couldn’t stand to be inside. She stood in the park era in the center of the camp, her face tipped up towards the sun. She hadn’t had natural sunlight in weeks. She took deep, steady breaths of the fresh air. There was no way to describe how she felt, the sense of freedom and relief at finally being let go. There were no walls closing in on her, the chaos in her mind was getting quieter and she felt like she could breathe again. She’d go back inside, get back to work in a few minutes. She really wanted to check on Ric’s condition and then find out what the camp was saying about what happened.
Everyone had to know what had happened by now. There was no way to cover up something like a death and even if they tried the camp’s gossip network would find it out anyway. Everyone had to know that she had killed someone. It was self-defense, Hope’s actions had been perfectly legitimate but she was still struggling with coping. She wasn’t supposed to be a killer. She was the nice person on camp, the sweetheart and yet…
She let out a long breath and just stood there. At least she was free.
