And I've now managed to see the magical gradient between occident and orient that had always eluded my understanding, up close and personal.

That's one of the cultural aspects that fascinates me the most. It's more visible going along souther asia, but in the north it just gets swallowed up in a big blob marked "Russia" (with little in the way of interior detail) for most people.
