DSL success!

For anyone who doesn't know, my DSL service has been miserable since it was installed back in the 90's. Hours of sitting on hold with SBC, many truck rolls, etc. I simply have a problem line. It's unreliable, goes down in heat or rain, and slow, I often get only about 5kpbs upload and 75kbps down.( Read more... )

I know how painful the DSL problem has been so I'm very happy you have it solved.

What can you tell us of the details behind getting the problem fixed?

Combination of problems including:
  • dropping the line from a remote terminal instead of the CO. I knew this was a possibility, but the new guy is the only company/person to have known how to affect it.
  • house wiring - some of my jacks have old wires and thus bad lines. We just tested them all until we found something that worked using the newer filtering system.
  • reworking parts of the building box - previous service agencies have been unwilling to spend any time changing lines around. This guy spent a couple hours here screwing with stuff until it worked.
  • goal driven - this guy was unwilling to accept that my line should be terminally degraded, which is fine because he as much as promised me 3Mb or my money back. All previous agencies simply hooked it up once, read out a number, and left me with whatever showed up.
  • magic jostling and/or luck. The line originally showed up at half strength at my mac mini. We connected his laptop directly to a new modem and it got full speed. Then we gradually replaced bits in the data path from ( ... )
