1. "Hey. How are you today?" He shifts from foot to foot, clears his throat once, twice, and smiles. "Here, look. I brought you something." He gestures at the bunch of chrysanthemums in the crook of his elbow, laying them on the grave with a rustle of paper. "Do you like these? I don't really remember, but you know, Kyoko-san says everyone likes receiving flowers."

He pauses and the smile fades. "I'm sorry I didn't come before. I… Couldn't." Gokudera stares solemnly at him, neither forgiving nor unforgiving, and Yamamoto will never know what the man would say because pictures don't talk and the real thing is dead. It's a passport photo, the only one they could find where Gokudera was alone and looking at the camera with something that didn't resemble a glare.

"Tsuna - Tsuna's doing okay," he says, because he thinks it's the sort of thing Gokudera would like to hear, news of the Tenth and the flourishing and honour of the famiglia. Tsuna misses you. He blames himself, you know.

"I…"

2. He’s wading through the remains of the Yamamoto sushi store, too accustomed to his weapons of choice to be bothered by the smoke. There’s no reason for his eyes to itch, he keeps telling himself. Fire is my ammunition. I am its owner!

Yamamoto is standing in the thick of it. Gokudera hesitates some feet away, wondering if he’d prefer space (silence). In the stillness between them, something pops and crackles, crisping into ash. Gokudera flinches despite himself. It could be Yamamoto’s dad. It could be his father’s skull. It could be -

“We have to go. It’s not safe here.”

It’s okay to not be strong enough.

3. Bianchi is still inside the building when it collapses on itself, the explosion so loud it renders them completely deaf. By the time Yamamoto comes to his senses, Gokudera is hurtling towards it, reckless as flame. His mouth is wide and he’s screaming. No! NO! or maybe God, God and then Yamamoto is atop him, hands to wrists, knees to knees and don’t think, don’t think.

Gokudera shoves at him, raw and bloodshot, lashes glittering with betrayal. Yamamoto thinks his heart might burst.

Why won’t you help me? His eyes are pleading. Furious like the Storm.

I can’t lose you too.

No, I didn’t miscount. ;)
