Language (III) - Human resources

Dec 25, 2005 01:57

It frightened me to realize that "human resources" doesn't mean resources for humans, but using humans as resources.

i always thought that the term human resources is kinda disturbing. but the thought that trees, gold, fish, etc are natural resources and not just nature kinda disturbs me too. capitalism - everything has a price tag!

Right. Resources don't exist. The world is not host to resources for the purposes of use (exploitation).

But what I find especially disturbing is that [dominant culture/corporate culture/capitalism/civilization] no longer needs the dichotomy between human and everything non-human to justify exploitation--that our culture has grown so cynical that we don't need to even lie to ourselves that those we exploit are untermenschen.

When the personal dept became the human resource dept, the company became a flesh eating zombie.

Heh, I just listened to your voice post. Asthma and lung infections suck, I hope you get better soon.

But this made me laugh, it reminded me of this quote by Derrick Jensen: One of the things I say that has been very well-received is that the most common words spoken by any environmentalist I know are, "We're fucked." People will say, "Well if that's the case then why don't you just kill yourself," and the answer to that is that "life is good."

how is yours going?
Apart from a little emotional withdrawal from a visit with an old friend, and a little bit of the Seasonal Affective Disorder, I'm doing really well.

Nice to know not everyone there hates me. ;) I kid, I kid.
