Word help needed!

Help! I need a word starting with D, that describes a type of person who might get involved in a fight between escaping burglars and the police who are trying to catch them, either on the side of the burglars or on the side of general mayhem and aggro. I always thought it was Indian (Hindi?), which would make it as English as most words in our language...

The is derived from Hindi, but so are veranda, pajamas, and even Old Blighty. (In other words, what you said.)

It's in the right area, but I think 'delinquents' is ahead at the moment. Though there has been a surprise entry by 'dustmen', which has good visual potential.
