Katie Bell couldn't believe the arrogance, the sheer hubris, the gall of Greengrass! To dare her, her to one-on-one, as if Katie hadn't been on the team since second year--but then again, Greengrass was a Slytherin, maybe she could.
It had been a perfectly normal day, beginning of her last year, and Slytherin had just finished their tryouts. Katie had been surprised to see Millicent Bulstrode and Daphne Greengrass try out. After all, Slytherin rarely had girls on the team, and while she doubted Bulstrode's gender, she had no doubt whatever that the blonde, snobbish, arrogant, pureblooded Daphne Greengrass was indeed a girl.
And Katie knew girls, in fact, Katie was very rarely wrong about girls.
It had started when Daphne had winked on her, with one of those, dry Slytherin smirks that drove Katie up a wall. She wanted to snarl and ask what that was all about, and as they crossed paths, she could have sworn she heard Daphne laugh--not giggle, like Katie did, or even chortle, like Alicia, but a slow sort of chuckle that made Katie's cheeks flush and her mind go hazy.
But Daphne Greengrass was straight--as straight as an arrow, Katie was sure. And, after all, Katie knew girls. So, she took it the only way she could--as an insult. "What are you laughing at, Greengrass?"
Greengrass turned, arching a single , perfectly sculpted eyebrow at Katie. "Nothing," she said simply. "Are you always so defensive?"
"That's right, nothing." Katie snapped. "I bet you're so bad, you didn't even make the team--unless you were shagging the captain to do it." Okay, the minute the words were out of her mouth, she knew she was out of line, and wanted to take them back, but the way Greengrass kept staring at her, as if seeing through her, made her defensive, and as always, open mouth, insert foot.
"Really?" Daphne asked, and if she was upset, it didn't show in her tone or in her voice. "Care for a little wager then? You and me, one-on-one?"
Katie snorted. "If I win, you have to wear my Quidditch robes, no alterations, all day, on Saturday." Wagers she could do, Quidditch she could do, and she would not think about what else they could do 'one-on-one, because she was sure Greengrass was straight, and she had Alicia.
"And if I win...one favour to be named at a later date. Deal?" Daphne asked, grey-blue eyes twinkling in a way--no, Katie, no, you aren't allowed to think such things.
"Ha, no way I'd trust a Slytherin with a favour to be named later." Katie said, as her mind whirled with what Daphne could have wanted to claim. "Try again, Greengrass."
Daphne sighed. "Fine, one embarrassment for another." She said simply. "You have to sing an aria, of my choosing, in front of the entire Great Hall."
Katie groaned, she was the worst singer in the world. "All right, fine." She said with a sigh. "Tomorrow, after dinner, Greengrass, and if you don't show up, you forfeit."
"Oh, I'll show up," Daphne said with an almost warm smirk, before heading off with Bulstrode. "And Katie, good luck, you'll need it."
"Me?" Katie called at the Slytherin's retreating back. "I'm not worried!"
After all, Katie knew all about Quidditch, she was never wrong, and Katie knew girls, and was never wrong.
Well, almost never.
