Anyone out there that has never read Candide by Voltaire should definitely pick it up at your local bookstore. It's a fairly short read (only 144 pgs including a 15 pg introduction on the copy I have), and extremely weird! It was published in 1758 and according to the introduction deals with the topic of suffering and god. I can't say much more
