Trinity 1.4

This episode tried to fit a lot of stuff in and I suspect that both last week’s episode and this one are meant to act as a bridge between the early episodes and what’s coming. This episode certainly had less WOT?! per minute than previous episodes. There were still things I loved though. Christian Cooke for a start. He really rocked this episode. The evil father thing was kind of predictable but really well played. For a horrible second I thought Charlotte was going to comfort him and they were going to have a ‘moment’ but fortunately not. What happened was much more in character and in keeping with how Dorian and Charlotte are interacting at the moment.  And I still love the interaction between the cousins.  In my head, at least, Rosalind knows Dorian well enough to have a fairly good idea when she starts the Dorian/Charlotte rumour that it’s true.

At some point I should really write something coherent about Trinity and gender, but at the moment I’ll just settle for observing that I’m glad Rosalind and Charlotte are fighting over something that they both want for themselves rather than competing for the attention of a man.

Most of the other things I liked about this episode were tied into the general theme of “Everything that isn’t morally grey is pure black.”

One of the ways we see it is through the  election. Charlotte, Dorian, Rosalind, Theo, Angela, Maltravers and Gabriel all either stretch the rules, use underhand tactics or outright cheat in their attempts to get what their own desired outcome in the election. I think, so far, that this is also the episode which makes it clear how similar Angela and Maltravers can be. Neither of them balk at using other people for their own ends and I think we start to see that Angela has the potential to be as ruthless as Maltravers. She certainly doesn’t pull her punches when it comes to trying to manipulate Cooper, despite the fact that he is mentally fragile.

Things I did not like

The fools. I know, not a surprise.

The election officers. How stupid are they. Not only were the votes going up as they were sitting in front of the screen but they were beeping as each vote was added. How did they not notice? It’s such a small thing but annoying.

The plot thickens

Who are the marionettes? Ross is there and I think one of them is in clerical robes, so I assume it’s Richard Arc but that still leaves quite a few others.

Who was the masked figure? It seemed like he could be a possible ally (after all, Jonty didn’t pull the plaque down so it must have been someone else.) I suppose it depends on what happened while Jonty was unconscious? Most of the main characters were in the debate at that point, although I can’t remember seeing Cooper.  I’m actually slightly apprehensive about Jonty’s character arc. If the only surviving gay character is overcome by his emotions and goes insane because of his doomed love it’s going to leave a bad taste.

What is Dorian’s father planning for Ros? It sounded like she knows what it is and isn’t completely thrilled.

The combination of the papers with Richard Arc’s symbol and Maltravers’ mention of 25 years point are pointing to the fact that he was up to his neck in ‘the project’ at one point. How is Charlotte going to react and how much do Angela and Gabriel already know?
Speaking of Gabriel, could he be passing information to Maltravers? (Mainly because in my head there is an Angela/Gabriel-Maltravers/Gabriel story where Angela and Maltravers are both using him in their games.)
