I know I've seen this make the rounds before but I've never given it a try.

I just finished it an hour ago! Well, I read it over 20 years ago but have to say that I'm sure I got so much more out of it now. I think that one of great things about it is how Scout sort of feels that the process was fair - there was a trial with a jury and they made a decision that you have to live with and that's all. It's the acceptance of an eight year old with the world ( ... )

I also agree with your summation of Wuthering Heights. I have read Jane Eyre many times but Wuthering Heights was just too depressing.
Your boys would probably love the hobbit. Tolkein wrote the original story for children though adults love it too. Since they are currently filming the Hobbit, this would be a great intro. It is best to read The Hobbit before the Lord of the Rings. The Hobbit is a lighter read than LoTR but provides the background for the three volume series.

We've listened to the Hobbit before though my youngest probably doesn't remember. But a read through before the movie comes out is definitely in order.

If I had to pick something off this list to try right now I might try A Town Like Alice
Oh Nevil Shute! My all time favourite author and A Town like Alice is near the top of my favourite books too. I have about 10 of his books on my Kindle. I can just keep rereading them.
My other favourites on this list include The Hobbit, Lord of the Rings, Anne of Green Gables (and all sequels), The Wind in the Willows, The Three Musketeers, and the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy.

What do you think of "Notes form a Small Island"? I really liked "In A Sunburnt Country" and "A Walk in the Woods", but I was disappointed with "Notes from a Small Island". I think Bill Bryson gets a little too opinionated in it. I've been to some of the places he didn't like (i.e. Dover) and loved them.

Notes from a Small Island is my first Bill Bryson book. I've always heard good things about A Walk in the Woods and it's been on my "I should read that someday" list forever. Since I've been listening to audiobooks in the car while I wait to pick up the kids from school or run errands I picked up this one because I'm also on a British kick. I didn't realize that it was going to be so funny! But since I haven't read his other books or spent much time in England I can't say much about his opinions.
I'm trying to get back into reading actual books again. I sort of fell out of the habit once I found fanfic.
