Side Story #05: Enter Edward Elric

Madame Pince's screech of righteous indignation could be heard from one end of Hogwarts to the other. She was then seen escorted into the hospital wing by pitying first years while a crowd gathered in her wake, wondering what in the world just happened.

A few hours later, Dumbledore called a staff meeting, the first unofficial one since Ginny Weasley's sudden disappearance in her first year. The teachers mostly assumed that it was to discuss how the library shifts would be divided. After all, no librarian meant no organization and no organization meant the students would have an excuse for not doing their work. They gathered in Dumbledore's office where the fire was still blazing from Madame Pince's departure. Before they could even open their mouths, the Headmaster cleared his throat and said, "I have already found a replacement for Irma. He will be arriving any moment now."

Then, on cue, the fireplace blazed a bright green color and someone stumbled out in a less than graceful fashion. It was a young man with a suitcase, late teens, long blonde hair, and obviously very flustered. (Flitwick would later learn that the boy's father had shoved him into the fireplace after rounds of "I'm not going in THAT" and "Are you insane?".) He looked behind him at the fire in wonder, which was once again its natural orange color, and sighed. He then turned around only to be greeted by the sight of odd people in odd clothing giving him odd looks.

"Er..."

"Welcome to Hogwarts, Edward." Dumbledore said mildly, apparently unperturbed by his new employee's startling entrance.

"danke Sir."

"Wir sprechen Englisch, Edward."

"Ah, ja sir." Edward cleared his throat and said to the teachers in heavily accented English, "Hello."

"Edward here was recommended to me by an old friend." Dumbledore told the staff. "He will be taking over Irma's duties until she's recovered." The boy looked very awkward as he bowed his head quickly.

Dumbledore talked a bit more about keeping this entire business under wraps for the sake of the Ministry not getting on their case. Also that Edward had a reason to be here and would depart when it was completed. Snape appeared to heavily suspect that Edward wasn't even a registered wizard much less a librarian. The second the meeting broke up, Trelawney immediately approached the newcomer.

"You have had a great journey, dear, and you give off the most unusual vibes I've ever felt." She said mistily, "Let me give you one fortune-reading."

Edward looked startled, but then said with quiet sincerity, "That is very kind of you, but I think I will pass."

"For whatever reason?" She asked, quite put down at the disappearing prospects of being allowed even one reading.

"I do not believe in pre-determined fate."

"But-"

"That is quite enough, Sibyl." McGonagall said, coming up, lips tight. "Albus already said he had a mission; you can give him a reading when he's done with it. Come along, Edward, I'll show you around the school."

---

The second the pair stepped out into the hallways, they encountered a Hufflepuff first year, who squeaked and turned an embarrassing shade of red before taking off.

"Is she alright?"

"She will be." McGonagall said in the taciturn manner he would become accustomed to. She walked him to the library and pointed at the great, detailed map of Hogwarts in the undiscovered History corner. "You are here." she said, pointing to the large shape labeled 'library'. Then she went on and skimmed the rest of the school's structure- his living quarters, the Great Hall, each teacher and their respective classes, everything. Then she pointed to a large square on the side of the building. "That is the Quidditch field."

"What is Quidditch?"

"It's a game played on broomsticks." McGonagall said, matter-of-factly. "There is a game in the next month; you're welcome to come take a look."

She then waved him around the rest of the library, and after a slight detour in the Restricted Section, she left, wishing him luck.

---

And quite oddly, Mr. Elric's tragic death by a rampaging Hippogriff was predicted the next day by an uncharacteristically passionate Professor Trelawney.
