Naruto could not explain the hesitation he was feeling. Here he was, the home he so longed for but a mere distance away and he couldn't move a single step. Everything looked the same, but it just didn't feel the same; something had changed and it was him.
Itachi was staring at him steadily. "What is the matter, Naruto-kun?" he asked quietly. "Isn't this what you wished? Do you not still want to go home?"
That was half-way true- for the first few months of his 'kidnapping', he'd talked about nothing but escaping back to the sanctity of Konoha and bringing Itachi to justice. When did he stop? When did 'home' stop being home?
"I don't know." He said finally, "I.. I..."
How could he tell his abductor that he wanted to stay with him? How could he convey his feelings into words?
I don't want to go there anymore, he wanted to say. I should be where my heart is. I should be with you.
Wordlessly, he pulled his hitaite from his forehead, the only object he had connected to Konoha that remained undamaged, along with a kunai. And right before Itachi's eyes, he drew a fine, permanent mark in the steel before offering it to his companion, eyes cast downward.
Itachi regarded the act with indifference. After what seemed like forever, he took the offering and tied it around the younger boy's neck. Then, he turned his heels and walked in the direction opposite of the village, Naruto following closely after.
It will come back to you only if it's meant to be.
